I did find a page for the MIT mill spindle toolhead with a sketch and BOM:

Machines That Make | MtM | An MIT Center for Bits and Atoms Project

Still nothing but a picture on their PopFab toolhead quick-connect :

I can expand on my idea a bit.   Take 2 inexpensive briefcase-size photo equipment cases (like the Xit XTHC40 on Amazon), placing them back to back (for your total width capacity desired), and cutting matching openings to allow the print bed to slide thru, chamfering opening corners for strength. Then, mate them together (say, with pop-rivets).  You may have to provide some "feet" on the standing "bottom" to allow the lids to lie flat when "butterflied" open.  I would prefer Delrin for the bed "v-slides", but that's probably cost-prohibitive for the DIT'er.

You can size your cases based upon your printer frame and desired bed travel.

Now, if I can figure out how those MIT kids made their quick-change system for their PopFab "multitool" (printer/router/laser cutter),  I think we may have some DIY portable "factory-in-box" gold here...

One group has developed a multi-purpose machine with interchangeable heads (extruder, laser cutter, CNC miller/router).  It actually makes sense.  It's all CNC at it's base (tool on, tool off, tool up, tool down, tool travel, and the combinations).  My first experience was programming a CNC milling machine in college, using punched paper tape (yeah, I'm old...).

    Kind of a "Factory-In-A-Box"...  Now, there's a marketing idea...  ;-)

It's funny...  His Prntrbot Go design looks like a big step backwards (certainly in aesthetics).  Others in the EU and at MIT have jumped on the portable bandwagon, but they have the setup and small build size issues.

Some downloadable design drawings (even sketches would be a start, rather than just on-camera whiteboard), a bill of materials, and cost list would have been nice in the episode.

You've shown a great proof of concept, but that's about it (no details).   But, as an old mechanical designer/drafter/computer science guy, i'm a stickler for documentation.

I'm considering using metal briefcase/luggage/camera case lids for the sides, just to be more elegant, and provide better transport protection.

I guess I'll just rewatch and take what notes that can be derived, plus check other open DIY designs (nylon bushings vs. brass, re-task old CD/DVD drive motors to cut costs, etc).

The portability is a big added plus...

Defo from me to. Would love a CNC machine to cut the plastic sheets.

Okay, so after watching the episodes a million times, I was hooked. So, like every other person out there, I want to build one. Sadly though, I donor have the machines available to manufacture the parts. I heard in the episode that there was a possibility of a kickstarter starting up and was wondering if that was still an ideas. Hope it is as I would love to get my hands on one!
