Ben modifies a keyboard so the WASD keys provide the same analog control of an Xbox controller. Ben takes apart a standard keyboard to install magnets, Hall effect sensors, and a modified Xbox controller to create a better gaming keyboard.

I know with the uno you can get low speed 1.1 usb connection so can't you just sniff the usb data coming from the xbox controller and have the arduino send those commands instead of going from the arduino to the xbox controller?

Left 4 Dead was not a ported to the pc. Your premise is correct though most games are a ports but valvle doesn't do pc ports. splitting hairs really but give them their due.
