Hi Ben,
Nice work!
What I would have done differently is trying to get rid of the cd-rom completely and replace it with a SD-card interface which emulates the CD-ROM. Then use ROM-images to load games.
I find it amazing that the laserunit still works in this thing. But I fear it won't last very long as time progresses.
