Viewer challenge: fixing the 'Blinking NES'

Hello Ben. I have a Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and it gets kind of annoying when the game doesn't start and the screen just 'blinks'.

So, how do i fix this? I heard from my friend that it has something to do with some kind of area-coding chip or something, but i'm afraid to open my NES for nothing.

  • The ultimate reason for this is the lockout chip. Upon boot, the one in the NES sychronizes with the one in the cart and then allows the game to run.

     

    So it's mostly the 4 signal pins for the lockout chip that get corroded and cause problems on the cartridge.


    You can elimate this pitfall by disabling the NES's lockout chip. Google "disable NES lockout chip" and you can locate instructions. It's super easy, the slowest part is opening the NES to get at it.

     

    You can also split the audio signals and separate some of the channels to left and right stereo (if you had some RCA jacks)

    Thanks. Works fine now, just had to ground pin four or three...
