Viewer Challenge: Combined Retro Game Systems

As a graduating college student it is time to leave the nest and get that first apartment.  I would like to bring a lot of my classic game systems but the fact is they take up too much room.  So my idea for a viewer challenge would be to mod/hack the following game systmes into one device.  The game systems would be N64, gamecube, sega genesis, snes, nes, and if possible also PS2.  I could provide all these systems for the challenge.

The stipulation on this would be the following:

1) All systems must have all controller ports available (for multiplayer with friends)

2) Somehow manage all the cords so that there is one cord to hookup but maybe a switch on the device to select the game system

3) The device should be easy to pack and carry around (rectangular? portable?)

For more of a challenge and if it helps make this a more awesome build, the ps3, xbox, and/or xbox360 could be included as well, but must conform to the same stipulations.  Again I would/could provide these.

    Thundergod, welcome to Element14!

Sounds like you are proposing a portable MAME system. A portable emulator to be exact. The GPX2 is what you want. It already emulates NES,  PC Engine, Atari2600/7200/5200, Atari Lynx, C64, Spectrum, CPC, BBC  Micro etc. And more recent consoles may be added to its functionality.

You can even develop your own games or emulators on it! Check out the wiki to get started developing.

    Thanks.

I have seen those around, but here is my issue with those.  I would like to play multiplayer games with friends with the actual hardware (up to four people on gamecube and N64).  It is nice to have the emulators and roms (not to mention a lot cheaper!) but I feel like there is nothing quite like the original hardware and hopefully the ease of connecting to a tv and playing the games without software issues and possibly lag.

However this may be another great addon for the idea of using the actual hardware (those other systems that while may not be super awesome to play multiplayer with, would still be fun to play randomly).  The best way maybe to do this without using the GPX2 hardware would be to implement a computer system with cables to hookup to the TV.

    What do you think?

p.s.  I am not a software or electronics person per se, but I try to stay up to date with tech in general, so in otherwords I could be wrong about the capabilities of the GPX2, but at the moment I just don't think it is a great system for multiplayer (good ole days of Goldeneye!!

    T,

Just so you know, the GP2x has a TV-out cable accessory and it does multiplayer. I think this device might be exactly what you want.

Google the GP2x and see all of its glory.
