Viewer Challenge (Multi-System.....System)

Hello, I am young viewer of the show and and challenging Ben Heck to try his abilities and to make a system that can play games from more than one system (ex. PS2, XBOX) but the real challenge is to choose from the examples and to add either DS or PSP capabilities.

All those system you listed have diffrent programing that is used. For the same reasons you can not just plug a PS2 game into a XBox 360 would be the problem here. You would have to program another system to decode and decipher and render the graphics from each system used. Thats allot of codeing to be done, more than any single human could do.

There are a few options, such as gutting several systems and incorporating them in one case like a large computer case. A PC can run a program called an emulator to siumulate many older game systems, a tv tuner or video capture card could be used to pickup the hardware game systems video outputs. Depending on how many devices installed it might be nessacary to use some kind of switching device to change inputs since most video capture devices only support one input. Only down side I can see is that depending on how many devices you install in a single case the number of fans required to keep it all cool could become quite noisy. Would be an interesting project.

Sorry to say this to you ethan, but there is already a device that does this. It is called the personal computer. An xbox, ps3, or whatever is just a pc designed to be work in a specific fashion, to play games proprietarily. However, games are almost always designed ON pc. This is kinda silly, as we could just play them on our own pcs instead of having to buy consoles. However, companies have there own agendas, piracy and profits and such.

I'm not saying that consoles are stupid, as there are many pluses to designing one (efficency, price, etc). However, the idea to mash all of them into a case seems. . . . useless. The consoles would just be in a big box. It might look neat, but the fuction would be no different. When you mod something you try to make it do something different then it was supposed to, like make a crank flashlight charge your phone.

Don't feel bad ethan, as I have heard this idea from a large number of people.

Well, what if ben built a custom case that had a multi disk changer (IE a 3 disk changer) that doesnt spin, just loads straight and each of the slots is labeled for each system (360, wii, ps3). Once it is in, lets say you put in a PS3 game into the ps3 slot. each disk area has a separate disk reader from the system in question (the xbox reader would be under the xbox, ps3 under the ps3 slot, etc) that would connect to the main system that is built into the box. basicly its all three machines in one box, just different disk readers given that the reader cant read other system disks right?  if a single reader CAN read all the disk, just cant execute it due to different systems, has a single drive connected to a device that can read what kind of disk it is, then pass the code onto the correct system.

As far using one drive to read multi-game media...good luck.  There are only four models of drive that will work with the xbox 360, and these have a drivekey that is console-specific.  The wii uses entirely different hardware...IDK if there exists a mod to allow a wii console to use other drives than the nintendo one.

PS3...no effing way.  Has to be a blu-ray, and again, the controller board is matched to the CPU.

However...when I first started reading this post...I thought he meant like one console that would play any atari/NES/SNES/N64/etc. cartridges.  Not an emulator...my xbox1 does all this already.

I mean some kind of super hybrid case...like a smartcard reader from hell.  For bonus points, add connectability for the various controllers.

The question would then arise of if it would just be easier to use a PC to do the HW-SW emulation, or go full crazy and get the controller boards for all the old consoles.  Some of them have been re-made to be really small...
