PS2 Media PC Case mod

Hey Ben and crew,

I have an old first generation Play Station 2 that broke down a long time ago and I never had the heart to throw it away. I was thinking today, maybe I can build a media center pc and gaming system out of it. I looked for a motheboard small enough to fit in the case and could not find one. I want more power than the Rasbery Pi can handle. So Ben, Do you think you could take on this challenge and help me out?

Why not use a mini-ITX motherboard? the Zotac brand makes a lot of PCs with these type of motherboards built in, however most ITX motherboards you can buy will not have that much power to them so you have to consider doing gaming or media center PC but not both unless you want constant lag. Also unless you buy from a manufacturer like Zotac or get a part out of a already built PC like the HP tower PC my friend has with a mini-ITX built in, you're not going to get a newer processor. The most mini-ITX processors go up to I've seen is 1.5 Ghz which isn't that much speed even in early 2000, but they do allow at least newer amounts of RAM you can fit on a board from today's standards like 4 GB to I've seen about 16 GB of RAM which is a factor to how fast it will be and what version of the OS you get. Anything below 4 GB you can use a 32-bit system and get the full speed that a 32-bit system will offer, anything at or above 4 GB you should get a 64-bit OS if you want good speed. If you go above 4 GB on a 32-bit system, there's a possibility of overload which will slow down the PC and on some systems will crash it.

I used some AMD E-350 boards recently that would easily fit inside the PS2 case. Even the new slim one!

I looked at a lot of Mini ITX boards and they are too big for the case. I would have to modify the console to fit it or build a new case. Maybe I can figure out a way to use the CNC on campus to make a case that looks exactly like the PS2 case. Thanks for the suggestions.

A Mini ATX board is too big to fit inside the old fat PS2?  That seems strange.

Look into the PCDuino if you want a small form factor but a little more oomph than the Raspberry Pi.  There are plenty of small linux boards out there since the inception of the Pi.
