Cheap 3D Printer

Hi to all,

I would be very grateful if you answer my questions?

I have decided to buy a printrboard from ebay and several stepper motors:

Printrboard£    77.59 1http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PrintrBoard-Electronics-for-PrintrBot-Prusa-Mendel-or-your-RepRap-project-/271019776730?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f1a099ada
5V Stepper Motor£       9.60 3http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DC-5V-Gear-Stepper-Step-Motor-with-ULN2003-Driver-Board-4-Phase-Unipolar-/140956394738?pt=UK_BOI_Electrical_Components_Supplies_ET&hash=item20d1a7e4f2

Total

£    87.19

For the hot end, I am using the 3mm ubis hot end.  However, do any of you know which hot end is better - ceramic or cartridge? Thanks

Please may you tell me how I can be able to wire up the hot end and the stepper motors to the printrboard? Thanks and do I need the motor driver with it?

NB: I am using Ben Heck's Design forthe Double Decker 3D printer

Here is a stepper motor taken apart Canon MP190 Printer:Can I use this motor for the printer? Will the driver work. It has four wires.

Thanks again

    Hey Tim

As for which hotend is better that depends on who you talk to.  They are using different technologies to heat up.  The ceramic hot end uses a nichrome wire wrapped around the hotend with ceramic paste covering it.  Its similar to a toaster.  The cartridge type is similar to the power resistor hotend but a little more robust.  I typically go with the cartridge or power resistor type hotend but again that is just my preference.  One issue people have with the power resistor is that the resistor can burn out faster than for say if you were to use a ceramic hotend.   I would check out the printrboard documentation or its wiki page for all the hookups you will need(extruder, motor, endstops, heatbed).  As far as do you need a driver the answer is no.  The printrboard has these drivers integraded.  The motors will work but Im not sure you will get the torque out of them that is needed.

    Hey Tim

I would look at getting something similar to this for your stepper motors http://www.lulzbot.com/?q=products/nema-17-stepper-motors

as this is a typical.  Some will require/recommend you use nema 23 but most repraps use nema 17.
