First, you want to attach a shutoff resistor between the control terminal (gate) and the source. This is so the thing will drift off if the control electronics are somehow lost. If you are manipulating physical stuff, it can be large, 75K, maybe. If this is supposed to be fast, more consideration is required here.

You are forming a voltage ladder between a pull-up resistor and the conduction channel of the transistor. The low end of the conduction channel is labeled source, the high side is labeled drain, blame Ben Franklin. Your output is the tap on the ladder.
