How to use IRF520 transistor(or 3) to make NOT gate.

Howdy, how would one go about making a NOT gate. It tried using the tutorial on the Dummies page. It didn't work. Thank you in advanced!

First, you want to attach a shutoff resistor between the control terminal (gate) and the source.  This is so the thing will drift off if the control electronics are somehow lost.  If you are manipulating physical stuff, it can be large, 75K, maybe.  If this is supposed to be fast, more consideration is required here.

You are forming a voltage ladder between a pull-up resistor and the conduction channel of the transistor.  The low end of the conduction channel is labeled source, the high side is labeled drain, blame Ben Franklin.  Your output is the tap on the ladder.

So let's say you have a 5V supply.  We can make our load resistor a coupla K if this is just for demonstration purposes, if you have a voltmeter.  You could make an led+resistor string for the load if you are a visual-type person.  So, one end of your load resistor connects to V+.  The other end of the load resistor is your output.  It attaches to the drain of the (transistor)Q.  The source attaches to V-.  Don't forget to put in the shutoff resistor!  Now put a VM (voltmeter) across the load resistor.  Jump the control terminal (gate) to the high side of the supply and see what happens.

The Q is an SPST switch to gnd.

You're in bed late at night, dreaming.  You're Humphrey Bogart, on his boat.  You realize that someone onshore is shooting at you.  You have a burning lightbulb, it is attached to a battery through two wires.  You must douse the light or you are a sitting duck!  What are your options?  The ones I have thought of so far:

You can snip one of the wires

    You can enshroud the light

You can shoot the battery or (wet) the bulb, or poison its electrolyte

You can crowbar the lightbulb or the battery

    You could wake up

    it's complicated
