So let's say you have a 5V supply. We can make our load resistor a coupla K if this is just for demonstration purposes, if you have a voltmeter. You could make an led+resistor string for the load if you are a visual-type person. So, one end of your load resistor connects to V+. The other end of the load resistor is your output. It attaches to the drain of the (transistor)Q. The source attaches to V-. Don't forget to put in the shutoff resistor! Now put a VM (voltmeter) across the load resistor. Jump the control terminal (gate) to the high side of the supply and see what happens.
