Joystick Question: Atari Portable

I have another question about my atari portable. I want to use this joystick, Thumb Joystick - $3.95 : FunGizmos, make something fun! but it use potentiometers. the atari use buttons. is there a way to use this for my atari portable or do i have to use a d-pad like ben heck. (I am using an Atari Flashback 4.)

    One other thing I just thought of. This joystick might not be the best choice. almost any games controller has a joystick that you can use in place of this. Look for cheap 3rd party or broken controllers in your local used game shop and de solder the analogue stick. You can then use it the same way you would this stick. Doing so guarantees lets you test the stick first and may be cheaper. Spare 3ds analogue sliders from eBay should also work. One last thing, avoid n64 controllers, the analogue sticks wear down with regular use and won't work with this method.
