Creating a figurine in my own likeness...

Former Member
Former Member over 11 years ago

I am interested in the end-to-end processes involved in creating a model figurine (perhaps 7" in height) of my exact likeness...

I assume this will involve:

  • Converting images into a 3-D representation (the how-to's, software involved, etc), and
  • Printing a mold using a 3-D printer

What I'm interested in are specifics that will take me from where I am now (no knowledge, no equipment) to a finished figurine that represents my identical likeness.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Rick

This is actually (somewhat) possible through a third party service on firebox. I found this on LÜT Episode 47 from Vsause2 on Youtube. http://www.firebox.com/product/5430/3D-Printed-Heads This is however…

I recommend creating a 3d model using the software 123d catch. You can then send this to an external company for them to print, or if you are lucky enough to own a printer of your own, you can use that…

I'm not sure that's technically possible without significant human intervention and 'craftmanship', for example to paint it to a likeness. It will still look 'plastic' and '3D printed' otherwise perhaps.

Also, if you mean clothed, then a closer likeness would be with a small cloth outfit than with plastic. Texture would be more similar then.

So I think the process would involve hiring a craftsperson (including sewing etc) and maybe even an artist who will be familiar with more materials (and techniques) beyond just 3D printer materials.

This may explain why for movies everything is CGI.

This is however a 3D print of your head (exact likeness) not a full figurine.

Just bear in mind you will need a friend to take the pictures to make the model. Unfortunately selfies will not work.

    Don,

Wow! That's amazing! Is this a real business? I mean, are the models actually being produced, or is this more 'proof-of-concept' ?

Dunno in this particular case.  Saw someone with a figurine of themselves on Reddit or Bannination the other day, but I must have been at my other location because my history list doesn't show it.  I think if you search 'figurine' on Reddit you will find a frightfully realistic and NSFW one.  People are having this done somewhere.
