USB 1GB Flash memory with LCD

softwareinthecloud

Dear Element14 Community,

I am trying to build a USB flash memory device with built-in LCD.

I need to show the files or a particular file on the LCD.

The LCD needs to be very small similar to these:

Do not need to have a battery, microphone and audio player capability.

Could you please let me know if this is possible?

I am planning to 3d print the case myself. I just need the pcb+memory & LCD to be around less than $2.

How can I get the memory LCD and PCB built? Should I get the components seperately?

Is there a board that I can buy off the shelf that can do these at the lowest possible cost?

Thank you.

It technically possible - because MP3 players and similar tech exist that do the same thing. However your constraints are not realistic. I'm not an electronics expert, but wanting a custom PCB and display…

What's the goal? Sometimes starting at the beginning lets other people give you idea that you haven't thought of. You can get Wemos or arduino pro-mini knock-offs from ebay pretty darn cheap (about $5…

I think this is more likely to cost $50 in hardware alone.

This sounds like an advanced project to me. But I'm pretty new to this stuff!

I think you're going to need some sort of microcontroller since you need to interface the flash memory, read it, and then write information (filenames) out to the display.

My suggestions: Look for some teardown guides of cheap MP3 players to get an idea of the high level IC architecture in an MP3 player, and get an idea of what hardware you're going to need. I imagine you need some microcontroller, and then memory/ROM to instruct your system to read from the flash memory.

Do some searching online and see if you find any similar guides. Share these resources to Element14 folks, so we can provide some feedback. Focus more on the microcontroller and reading from the flash memory, and less on the display.

    Hope this helps!
