USB 1GB Flash memory with LCD

softwareinthecloud

Dear Element14 Community,

I am trying to build a USB flash memory device with built-in LCD.

I need to show the files or a particular file on the LCD.

The LCD needs to be very small similar to these:

Do not need to have a battery, microphone and audio player capability.

Could you please let me know if this is possible?

I am planning to 3d print the case myself. I just need the pcb+memory & LCD to be around less than $2.

How can I get the memory LCD and PCB built? Should I get the components seperately?

Is there a board that I can buy off the shelf that can do these at the lowest possible cost?

Thank you.

It technically possible - because MP3 players and similar tech exist that do the same thing. However your constraints are not realistic. I'm not an electronics expert, but wanting a custom PCB and display…

What's the goal? Sometimes starting at the beginning lets other people give you idea that you haven't thought of. You can get Wemos or arduino pro-mini knock-offs from ebay pretty darn cheap (about $5…

I'm not an electronics expert, but wanting a custom PCB and display for less than $2 sounds downright impossible.

The hardware costs alone in a device like the MP3 player you suggested are already more than $2, and this item is mass produced. Trying to do this yourself will cost way more, in time and money.

If you're willing to expand your cost constraint, I'm sure something is possible.

    THank you Jordan.

I can be a bit more flexible with the price but no more than $5.

Please also note, i dont need most of the components that mp3 players use like buttons, battery, audio components, headphone jack.

What options and components would be the best for this do you think?

Do you know if there is a similar project to this that I can use?

Should I try ink displays instead of LCD? Would this decrease the price?

Wouldnt you need buttons to be able to highlight the file you wanted to display, and also a button to turn the display on/off so its not on and wasting power all of the time and generally a battery would be needed too unless you only want the display to work when the device is plugged in.

Something you need to understand is that those cheap mp3 players are so cheap because of how many get made and the manufacturers are taking advantage of huge bulk discounts on the components and pcb manufacture. To make a one off, small order run or even a similar prototype would cost a whole lot more which is why people are giving you the realistic $50 type figures. Even if you plan to make millions of these, the prototype is still going to cost you a lot to produce.

There are other pitfalls too for instance you say you need an lcd screen similar to that mp3 player, generally lcd manufacturers dont sell those in small quantities, you would likely need to purchase them in quantities of 1000+ (lcd's like those are also much of the time custom manufactured to the buyers specification hence the minimum order quantities).

I really would just get to hacking existing devices, it would be much easier

Yes I would only need a button to turn on/off the LCD & maybe a battery.

I am aware the prototype will cost more initially but I was looking to get the community's opinion as to how I can achieve to bring the costs down.

    Hacking existing devices is viable.

Do you know any project that may be useful to me?
