My entry into the HLH competition. Following the build of my portable console! I wanted to build a capable portable console that would still fit into a pocket.

I used:

  • Raspberry p i 0W
  • A 3.5 inch Elegoo touch screen from Ebay
  • A generic Snes type USB game controller
  • A maplin 2500mA power pack
  • Some Micro USB connectors (male)
  • A generic HDMI to VGA adapter (I have had for ages, so not sure on the brand!)
  • Some Samsung batteries

Hey there, about the audio on the PIzero, with the right device tree overlay you can use other pins for audio, like I did here FAME BOY - build log 6 - Hack Like Heck

Well, I wish I had known that on Saturday! Good luck to you too!

Excellent job working around the hinge problem. Those types of setbacks are always frustrating. Great learning and a neat little gaming device!

Well done getting those parts to fit into such a small case! I know from experience that's not easy!

Having a screen on the controller is cool in of itself.

Plus, even with the wiring it has a clean to feel to it.

Thank you, I certainly wouldn't have had much space for anything more!

It has been a very steep learning curve on all fronts, hardware, software and video production!

I am definately going to keep working on the case and battery connections. They work, but I know I can do better.

I have already had some serious performance improvements on the screen, which has made it a pleasure to play (mario, mario kart and sonic), but clearly I am just terrible at mortal combat!

I felt a little at the end that there were more problems than solutions!

    Thanks, Rory,

I am not sure about grandkids yet, but I have a 2 year old that seems pretty keen on getting his hands on a soldering iron!

I have spent a lot of my career on building sites, coming up with "on-site engineered solutions" or making it up as we go along, and avoiding "suitable chemical adhesive" or glueing it!

Looks like you had quite a few issues come up throughout your build. That's rough. Great sticking with it! I was impressed to see you cram all of that into a SNES controller.

Props to overcoming all the issues that tried to slow you down. Crafty thinking and problem-solving  always clean things up quickly! I had my soldering iron die on me during the build too! Near the end of my video, I show my fancy new one that I ordered in a rush to finish my project. I can't wait for you to upload a video for the Version 2.0!

Very clean & impressive for an early build [way beyond my electronics knowledge .. shh image ] seems like you enjoyed it too, it's all about figuring it out as you go along (that's what I keep telling myself anyway lol ) Having an early build video documented is a real bonus as you progress & for the grandkids.. "way back in old 2  0 1 8 I was a heck of a hacker upper..! lol =D
