Sadly, I went through at least three N64 consoles, one mysteriously fried, and the other fried due to a power error. I admit that this was the hardest project I had ever worked on, probably because I am mostly self taught. This video encompasses over seventy - two hours of work, over seven weeks.

 

I used:

  • a Sony PS1 screen
  • 4 18650 batteries
  • an N64
  • two N64 controllers
  • 1 100uF capacitor
  • 1 1.8K resistor
  • 1 Texas Instruments PTH08080 WAH converter
  • 1 expansion pack
  • 1 can of black spray paint
  • 1 particle board
  • 2 3d printed top plates
  • 18650 battery holders
  • two toggle switches
  • 14 tactile switches

  • ..also them digital picture frames are in every bargain bin every where, the resolution can be actually way higher than the artifact-ed stock images!

  • This is awesome! I wasn't ambitious enough to try a "real" portable for this project, so kudos to you! Also, thank you for mentioning battery protection haha. Lots of people try to build things without protection and it is good to see people spreading the word image If that psone screen doesn't work out, you can always use a TFT backup car monitor. They have great picture quality and are very cheap and easy to wire up. You'll have to get a separate audio amp if you go that route, but they're smaller and easier / cheaper to replace than the psone LCD. Anyways I seriously hope you get this up and running again!

  • If it makes you feel better, Ben went through at least 3-4 N64s (including mine *tear*) for the portable he made. It's definitely a tricky one. Kudos for giving it a solid shot!

  • another one with some audio issues image from dremel+music to soldering there's a huge difference in levels, I was constantly hitting my volume buttons. What did you use for editing the video, was there no option for turning the videos? Sorry if I sound picky, but that always gets me image

     

    I liked the idea of the additional buttons on one side, too bad it didn't work at the end! Very ambitious project and the learning curves must have been quite something - I hope you will continue working on it and get it working in the end image I'd try reworking piece for piece with extra connectors and add some hot glue on the connections so they don't come loose that easily.

     

    Didn't get the reference the SNL sketch reference, need to youtube that...
