Sadly, I went through at least three N64 consoles, one mysteriously fried, and the other fried due to a power error. I admit that this was the hardest project I had ever worked on, probably because I am mostly self taught. This video encompasses over seventy - two hours of work, over seven weeks.

I used:

  • a Sony PS1 screen
  • 4 18650 batteries
  • an N64
  • two N64 controllers
  • 1 100uF capacitor
  • 1 1.8K resistor
  • 1 Texas Instruments PTH08080 WAH converter
  • 1 expansion pack
  • 1 can of black spray paint
  • 1 particle board
  • 2 3d printed top plates
  • 18650 battery holders
  • two toggle switches
  • 14 tactile switches

If it makes you feel better, Ben went through at least 3-4 N64s (including mine *tear*) for the portable he made. It's definitely a tricky one. Kudos for giving it a solid shot!

Great effort on this! It's evident how much work went into it. Let us know how things go when you get the new screen!

Sadly, it looks like my first video was uploaded, not the second one that was uploaded on Tuesday. So some editing mistakes are in this version and not in the second version, and I also had more footage…

Have a lot of respect for the fact that you not only used an actual console, you used one that was notoriously difficult to hack, and you were able to nearly pull it off.

Nothing beats a real console and my hat is off for taking the beloved N64 and using it to take make a portable out of.

Also love the fact that you focused a lot of attention on the work itself and made us feel a part of the process as you went along...

Hope you share the finish build with the rest of the community as a lot of us would love to see your take on it!

    :-)

There's always some unforeseen catastrophes in uncharted builds like these. I went through 3 screens building mine (don't ask....) At least you got it together in the end!

Really ambitious project. I can't tell you how many times we've gotten all the components connected and working and then something was suddenly broken once it was all in the case. Super frustrating and difficult to deal with when on a deadline. Great job giving it a try!

I tip my hat to your diligence! You really worked hard to complete this! Trust me, N64 portables are no easy feat. I went through about the same amount on my first attempt back when I was about your age. My mother soon got very upset that I kept breaking my new video game consoles. but it's really all about trial and error until you get a desired outcome. Keep at it! You have something that is so close to playable! I really want to make another portable like this one day. Go back to my roots and relive some fond memories. I gave you a vote so that you can have the funds to build another amazing handheld! You have talent for sure. image

Sadly, it looks like my first video was uploaded, not the second one that was uploaded on Tuesday. So some editing mistakes are in this version and not in the second version, and I also had more footage of the bottom controller of the portable in the second version.

Pretty slick attempt for a first N64 portable.  I don't think I've ever seen anyone geared towards being used one-handed which is super cool.

Like Madmorda pointed out, a TFT monitor might be a better option for when you revisit the build.  They're a lot easier to use, as well as a lot cheaper, not to mention you won't have to feel bad about using a relic in your build image

Also, have you considered 3D printing the case?  That would help give it a more polished look, as well as allow you to design in places for everything to mount.

Nice job!  I hope to see you make some more in the future.
