    Could you perhaps do a modern take on the nixie tube design either by:

     

    - laser cutting/engraving numbers into a stack of thin clear plexiglass/perspex plates which are then individually edge-lit by LEDs. The light should then leak out where the cut is made making the selected number visible inside the plate similar to a nixie cathode.

     

    - replace the nixie cathodes with electroluminescent wire then switch the output of the EL inverter to the numbers requiring to be energised. (the limited lifetime of EL wire probably does not make this suitable for always on projects such as clocks though).
