The team is participating in the IoT on Wheels Design Challenge on the element14 community. Their challenge is to come up with a connected, vehicle-related project used for travel, using parts from the provided kit. Bob Baddeley, an electrical engineer with experience designing products taken to market, has joined the team to advise on how best to turn their ideas into a reality.

    You made a good point that a mobile app developer will most likely be needed.

     

    In my opinion, there are not many possible scenarios to turn the Nucleo board (+ expansion boards) into an internet connected device, considering that the "wheels" do not usually have an internet connection itself:

    1) Using the Bluetooth expansion board to make the outbound connection, connected to a cell phone and a custom mobile application sending the data somewhere on the internet.

    2) Using the WiFi expansion board to make the outbound connection (but this also requires a mobile access point - either made from phone (tethering) or another 2G/3G/4G modem/router).

    I was wondering about the IoT part of this and what it meant when I first read about the challenge. It isn't really spelt out what it means and whether it has to be a permanent, real-time connection to a server. Is there anything in the rules that says it has to be permanently connected? Why wouldn't a 'store and forward' scheme be acceptable, where the wheels collect data whilst on the move and then relay it once a connection becomes available, maybe when a home WiFi router is within range?

    I wrote my previous post just because some real-time applications came to my mind.
