Welcome to the 500th episode of element14 presents!  We decided to try something new for this episode - pitting three of our content creators against each other with the limitations of creating a working project with all of the parts in THE BOX.  We also challenged the community members with the same restriction - you can see their projects here.

James, Clem and Katie are competing in this challenge - but they're playing for their favorite STEM organizations.  See more about the competition.

Here's a link to the prizes the STEM organizations can win.

BONUS content:

Since we covered three builds in this episode, we thought you might like some more behind the scenes footage of each of the projects:

Katie's Digital Theremin

Clem's Parcel Calculator

James' Getting Sound out of an Arduino

Member's Entrants:

We also challenged our members to Build Inside The Box , click through to see the Member Projects! Also watch related episode 504.

And here's the Brainstorming Call where they discussed the parts when they received them.

These projects are so good it's difficult to choose! I'm impressed as to how well everyone came up with ideas for the bunch of kit in the box I threw together, mwa hahaha!

I wanted to make sure I put all the things I liked about each of the builds. While voting is great, I wanted to make sure everyone knew that they were all awesome builds! Great job! Clem's Parcel Measurer…

Thanks Keith! I actually plan to make another iteration on that project with Barcode reader addition and more selective parts for the buld to practicalyl use it on my little webshop. Honestly I Am in great…

Dang, it is really difficult to decide. Clem's is practical and real world, Katie's is really creative (and she used the box), and James' is both creative and polished. I really liked James' idea of using the phototransistor as a punch card reader (even though that's not how it ended up), the idea had not crossed my mind. Excellent work from everyone!

Hmm katie's project has got me back to thinking about the "theramin" as it was something I had considered initially. I've now come up with a really rube goldberg idea around it. imagine the 2 TOF sensors each mounted on either a belt setup or threaded rod, so they're capable of moving, one on the x axis, one on the Z. the steppers would use the reading from the sensor on the X axis to set the height of the Z axis, and vice versa. so long as they were fast enough, it would track your hand in the air, and so you could control whichever 2 of parameters you'd want at the same time, say for instance frequency and volume. Hmm, I may go ahead and try doing that, I do have the spare nema 17s laying around.

Thanks, I thought the punch card idea was ingenious, using it like that hadn't crossed my mind until I watched the video.

Would love to see how your idea goes, post how it goes on here.

Once you get that working, you can perhaps try adapting it for darts...  image
