From Strava to Motion: Creating an Arduino-Powered Arcade Game with Running Data -- Episode 607

Following on from building an air hockey table, Lorraine is recreating another classic arcade game: the Derby. Instead of horses racing along a track, it will be runners! Find out how to download your running data from strava and move a runner along a track in competition with your family and friends. This project involves a bit of everything: 3d printing, laser cutting, coding in C and using motors with the Arduino Wifi board.

    I can't give you a answer because i didn't tried it out.But i wouldn't do it with strava.I prefer to build it with roll-a-ball like the original horse race but a little bit smaller.

    Is it possible the API has changed since then? I tried replicating on my arduino nano 33 iot, and sadly when running the getAccessCodes.ino program, I always get the following printout:

    Status code: -2
    
    Response: 
    
    Runner 1's refresh code: null


    I followed the process of getting the runner code from "Bonus Content" video. Status code -2 seems to suggest that the server timed out.

    I want it like the original game with horses. However, I'd love to add a simple pinball machine to it. Every time the ball is shot, it comes back down through one of three slots, 1, 2, or 3 points depending which slot it came down through. No draining, Ya just keep shooting until there's a winner then the game turns off. I'd like to make it bigger and longer if that's possible. Last thing, I tried to print the parts but they break easily when I'm trimming the flash away. I've reprinted them once. How many do I need of the printed parts to make it work? Please do a revamp of this with a simple pinball game and maybe metal tape to act like sensors to count the ball as it goes through the chute. That acts as a counter. Thanks

    Yeh, that was my first thought when I saw it. Anyone trying to modify the code is likely to over run the track at some point due to reliance on software. A bit like when people build their own H bridges on the cheap, eventually they will short circuit the transistors. Hence using limit switches with hardware control would protect the mechanism from programming errors.

    Some of the systems I've worked on in the past had three separate levels of safety. There were limit switches under software control for normal operation. There were limit switches under hardware control that would prevent further software control in one direction but would still allow reversing. Then there was a third layer that killed all power to the motor controllers should the motor still continue to run past the defined limit.

    There is more tactile involvement with rolling a ball I think. Also a bit more uncertainty in getting the ball into the best pocket. However there is a tendency to lose things if they aren't physically attached. 

    I guess you could revisit your coloured ball through a basketball hoop project so that you have to match the ball colour to a hole colour to score higher.

    Any project using balls up a slope will likely be bulky though and require some element of levelling before use, which is why I suggested a virtual ball roll instead. Also if doing a networked game then a free ball setup would be too easy to cheat with unless you had machine vision to detect cheating.
