Matthew relives some of his youthful hacking by dabbling in a little "pirate radio" broadcasting. In this video, he builds a handheld FM transmitter from some salvaged parts and a Raspberry Pi. The Pi uses a piece of software to convert wav files to frequency-modulated signals emitted from GPIO pin 7. To improve transmission quality and prevent undesired signals, Matthew also designs and builds a band pass filter and seals everything in a shielded case.

Radio has a smaller reach, maybe, but don't ever doubt it's power!

It happens when there are too many young engineers with time on their hands : ) But it was analog generated FM at that time, sadly no Pi's.. : )

Thanks! Don't you miss the halcyon days of trying to program the "perfect" mix tape? A delicate art of finding the right songs for the occasion AND organizing them for not only the right flow, but also not having "dead air" on the tape! Analog forever! image

And it was not cool having to fade out a song too prematurely or too crudely to make it fit : ) The secret was to fade out like the pro's : )

Hey, at least it wasn't 8 track where you often had to split songs across multiple tracks!
