Have you ever encountered a Vacuum tube in person? Wonder if it still works and what you can use it for? Clem found a very old valve in his pile of parts. He quickly consults his friend Max to find out if his vintage Valvo ED tube is still working and together they start to build a high-end tube testing device DIY kit, the ROEtest V10 by Helmut Weigl. Clem also shows you treasures from his Tube collection, including some really weird vintage Valves!

  • The extensive Software and Tube database! http://www.roehrentest.de/Software.html
  • You need to obtain a Software license and a preprogrammed PIC MCu from Helmut Weigl to build and use the Roetest. it comes with a CD-Rom containing documentation and a BOM tool to figure out which parts you need to order. http://www.roehrentest.de/Bestellung.html
  • Most parts can be bought at element14 stores but some specialized parts like the custom torrodial transformers and the PCBS should be obtained from Helmut weigl directly.

Wow. That is an amazing tester. Helmut Weigl has designed and built an incredible piece of test equipment. Very cool! mayermakes I'm looking forward to when you get yours complete. I'm sure that you will…

you may like it, I made sure the voltages involved are low and the tubes are readily available and still manufactured.

    Very good episode Clem.

When I was in tech school we used vacuum tubes in all our projects.

It was a great learning experience and easily translated to the semiconductor devices that were then appearing.

The tester kit is beyond my capabilities, but I still have some tubes around in may stash somewhere.

mayermakes  I would not be that hard. ALL of the graphics would be GTK, databases would be changed to mysql. crap you could even run it in a browser (Chrome, Firefox)

It would be a major re-write.  not impossible.

I totally understand you, but in this case there is no other choice and it works as good as on windows.

maybe one of these days some genius will make asimilar device that is more akin to the FOSS standards.

the software is windows .exe but can be installed with wine under Linux,

works great but You need to identify a specific usb port and tell the software to use that specific port.
