The analog-to-digital converters in digital oscilloscopes can do more than just “sample” the data. Modes like Peak Detect can make use of the ADC’s high-speed sampling even when looking at slower signals. This video looks at various modes and addresses when to use Peak Detect, Averaging, and High-Resolution acquisition modes.

Supplemental Content:

  • Tek’s ArbExpress Software (used to create the glitched waveform)
  • Suggestions for software to generate arbitrary (arb) waveforms

Oscilloscope in peak-detect mode with nearly solid yellow

I'm currently testing a switch-mode power supply. It has a super strange behavior. On a "cold" start it'll have over 500 mVpp of ripple. After about an hour or so of being on, it drops down to <70 mVpp. I'm still trying to figure out why.

But, this is a great example of using "Peak Detect" mode. I'm getting an effective sample rate of 1.25 Ga/s. So I'm going to see lower-frequency effects. But, the ADC+Memory controller is still sampling at 5 Ga/s.(I had it down to <500 Msample/s, but I wanted a faster update rate.)
