Downsizing MLCCs Quiz

Quiz | Passive Components | MLCCs Downsizing Q&A with Murata | WorkBench Wednesdays image

badge name

When downsizing multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) from larger case sizes down to 0201, there are several considerations. The first is supply chain availability. As customer designs get smaller, so do the requirements for the size of components like capacitors. Therefore, manufacturers like Murata are ramping up their production lines to accommodate smaller case sizes. Second are the design or technical considerations. For background on this topic, watch the following interview between Yang Jiang, Murata Product Manager, and James Lewis, element14 Presents host, as they discuss these considerations. Then watch the Workbench Wednesdays Episode, where James shows how the design considerations affect a 555-timer circuit.

To earn the Downsizing MLCCs Badge, score 100% on the quiz, rate this document, and leave your feedback on the quiz as a comment.

Some serious content presented on a lighter note. Thanks for putting a smile or two on my face today.

I essentially knew very little about MLCCs so I was interested in this episode so  I watched both videos. Regretfully I still only managed 60% so probably that would have been less if I hadn't watched the videos. I still don't think I will be using 0201s though as I had to get my magnifying glass out just to see them on the video. In real life, one sneeze and they'ed be gone.

Lots of information presented clearly in the video and the quiz summed up the content well.

One thing I learned when ESD testing a circuit that had MLCCs providing AC coupling to external (exposed) pins is that manufacturers in general do not specify ESD ratings on capacitors.  We encountered issues where there was large variability in ESD tolerance between manufacturing lots.  MLCCs are more susceptible to ESD damage because of the extremely thin dielectric layers.  We discovered in FA that the cause of the variability was the consistency of the ceramic slurry used in the dielectric.  Larger particulate size created larger gaps and failed at lower voltages.  We ended up sample testing every lot that we used.

Very enjoyable video and quiz, watched the video yesterday and took the quiz today, second guessed myself on one question and got it wrong. Went with the original answer and got 100%. Got to go with the gut.
