Create, Scare, Win! Join the element14 Community 2024 Halloween Competition!

Halloween hijinks are a hallowed element14 Community tradition and this year's Halloween Competition taps into the viral trend of Boo Boxes, where creators use their skills to make a box that delivers the ultimate scare – whether it's for a friend, family member, or even a nemesis.

Build a project incorporating electronics and the Halloween spirit inside a box, share it on our Halloween space, for a chance to win the prize.

Past years have seen all sorts of amazing projects which could be useful inspiration such as…

Now it's your time to shine!

Example projects for this year include:

  • Jumpscare in a Box
  • Spooky 'useless machine'
  • Haunted candy
  • Coffin that won't stop cackling

Submit Your Project

Additional Conditions:

  • Your project must include an electronics component. Project articles with high-quality videos and photos are highly encouraged.
  • Project articles will be judged as-is on the 8th of November, 2024

Terms & Conditions:

  • This contest page has 2 different links to submit the project. The "Submit Your Project" button puts it in "Projects", the other (Halloween) link seems to put it in "Halloween".

I used the big button and it put my project here:

    The Proverbial Black Box

  • I thought the prizes choice was good.

Maybe it could have been turned into a "Get your home ready for the hols" pack, listed as follows (and turned into three items because 3 is the magic number, with the fourth looking like a bonus on top):

    * Philips Hue Lighting system - a complete starter pack for high-quality ambient lighting in time for the various upcoming holiday seasons

    * Pi 5 - The latest Pi, powerful enough for running home assistants, streaming video to displays and compatible with the latest High-res cameras and other add-ons from raspberrypi.com

    * 100W USB-C Hub - A top brand hub from Anker, ideal for attaching modern peripherals to the Pi 5, including media storage sticks and sensors, or for use with your PC

And, as an extra bonus, a huge bundle of holiday decorations and accessories carefully selected by the element14 team!

  • Do we think the prize was compelling enough?

  • ...local screening of Psycho in 35mm film

    Great choice!

  • Have a very happy Halloween, everyone! Jack o lantern

Let us know if you have any exciting plans for tonight although I appreciate it's a Thursday. I'll just be staying in tonight handing out candy and watching Hammer horror movies (recommendations welcomed) but yesterday I did something a bit more exciting which was seeing a local screening of Psycho in 35mm film.

Our local cinema upgraded to digital in ~2013 but had space to keep one of their two 35mm projectors. The projectionist hooked up the digital projector to a camera to show us around the projection booth as they set up Psycho on the film projector and talked us through the process as he did it. It was very interesting seeing how films used to be set up until fairly recently plus the room and projectors themselves.
