In its simplest form, you would have a wire and a DVM with its leads on both ends like you would measure resistance. With more wires comes more headaches. And this is what I want to test for:
- Pin-out connector A to Pin-out connector B.
- Opens
- Shorts
- Out of Order.
Now, this all well and good for such things straight cables DB-25 to DB-25, or RJ45 to RJ45. There are many cable testers Rj45, etc. But what happens when one side is plugged into the DB-25 and the other into a Mill Circlura connector with 50 or 60 pins. The connectors are very costly 45 to 100 dollars each? This means I can not build a custom stub cable for each connector! Ok, the military is the budget but I don't, then you need what is known as a flying probe.
So how do I pull off this miracle? An Arduino, which is controlled via my desktop computer and a GUI. programing the cable sets are done with XMLl. Out of the box, the tester comes up as a DB-25/DB-25, Rj45/Rj45, as well as a DN-5 (maybe). to change to a Flying Probe (Guided) which changes all 50 pins to inputs and the probe as an output.
More To Come
