It’s during times like these that inspire innovation. May the 4th Be With You. Revenge of the 5th. A great time to help.
In that spirit, the “Fighting Germs” contest is here to not only reward that innovation ─ but also give to other charities for those attempting the same thing!

May the Fourth be with You (Star Wars Day) is the unofficial holiday of all things Star Wars, which is a pun on the famous Jedi saying, “May the force be with you!” The first recorded reference of the phrase dates back to May 4, 1979, the day which Margaret Thatcher became Prime Minister of the UK. Her party affiliation at the time took out a congratulatory ad in the London Evening News that stated, “May the Fourth Be with You, Maggie. Congratulations!”
Unlike the previous years of Star Wars Day, large and small celebrations around the globe have been canceled due to the ongoing pandemic. While public gatherings for fans have been put on hold, that doesn’t mean we can’t still celebrate in different ways. Disney+ is currently streaming the entire Skywalker saga, including the latest film Rise of the Skywalker. The channel also features a behind-the-scenes look at The Mandalorian, as well as the final episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
For fans of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Respawn Entertainment has released a new update for the game, which adds new cosmetics and combat challenges in arenas taken from different locations in the game. StarWars.com is offering up a myriad of different projects fans can take part in, including making Mandalorian Magnets, door hangers, and roll-out characters, as well as different Star Wars-based recipes, including Blue Milk pudding.
With the Coronavirus still raging all over the world, it’s a perfect day to remember the message Star Wars has brought throughout the films, TV series, and animations- hope and friendship, especially during dark times. To that end, the European Union has launched a new COVID-19 initiative that reflects that notion, which looks to fast track diagnostics, treatments, and vaccines to eradicate the virus. Starting today, the EU is kicking off a global pledge marathon to raise funds to help them meet those goals to the tune of roughly $8-billion.
Disney is also set to introduce Star Wars-themed face masks to help protect against the virus, including baby Yoda and R2D2, and will be donating 1-million of the cloth masks to children and families in hard-hit areas across the nation.
While we can’t gather together to celebrate one of the greatest sci-fi franchises in history, we can still enjoy the holiday in many different ways, and like the Sith, the Coronavirus will eventually be defeated, and hope will be restored to the galaxy.
