Make your own geeky gadgets in honor of Geek Pride Day on May 25th. As many of you are aware, earlier this month Star Wars Day was celebrated by believers on May the 4th. In a sign of universal solidarity, true believers greeted one another with “May the fourth be with you.” Those of a dark side bent argued the following two days about whether May 5th or May 6th was an appropriate day to celebrate their “Revenge of Sith Day.” They could not come to agreement on whether it should be “Revenge of the Fifth” or “Revenge of the Sixth” as it is their wont to sow the seeds of discord amongst each other as well as the rest of the galaxy. One thing Jedi, Sith, Knights of Ren, and whatever order Luke or Rey decide on can come to agreement on is that May 25th is a day that will not soon be forgotten! That’s because it’s not only Geek Pride day, it’s the day the greatest space opera ever told was first revealed on theater screens! On May 25th, 1977, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope was released and the galaxy will never been the same.
Cosmically speaking, May 25th is not only the perfect date to celebrate Geek Pride because of its significance to followers of Star Wars, it’s also a date celebrated by followers of Douglas Adam’s Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. That’s because May 25th is the date they celebrate their “Towel Day.” The anthropological significance of this date can trace its origins to The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy original radio series in 1978. On this date, a list of reasons for why “a towel …is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have” was revealed. Geek Pride Day is a day that does not belong to followers of Star Wars or the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy alone. Geek Pride Day was officially celebrated in the US for the first time in 2008. By 2009, it was officially sanctioned by the Science Channel with special programming. Meanwhile in Canada, events took place in Ottawa, home of the Canada Science and Technology Museum, to commemorate the day. Geek Pride Day, is a day for everyone around the world to celebrate their nerdom, whether it’s through meet-ups or parties to celebrate anything worthy of geeking-out over. In preparation for this special date, we will be holding a Geeky Gadgets project competition through the Project14 program. Create your own geeky gadgets just like Data from the Goonies:
