Project: Flush-A-Vader

beagles
beagles
17 Dec 2017

Aim:

To build a device that will remind people not to flush anything but toilet paper once they have finished their business.

The UK is being hit with the soft wet wipe style tissues that are advertised as flushable and other products such as cotton buds that are entering the sewage styles and causing blockages and equipment failures. In the fight to raise awareness of these issues I want to build the Flush-A-Vader.

Equipment:

Arduino Uno

Ardunio adafruit wave shield

Speaker

Motion sensor (I have two to try)

Proposed Design:

image

Proposed Method:

Step 1: Solder the Wave shield together

Step 2: Record message and import onto shield

Step 3: Get speaker wired up and working

Step 5: Work out how to use a motion sensor

Step 6: Link all together and house in a decorated cardboard tissue box

Wish me luck! :-)

Hi Kaylee,Here is an inexpensive IR kit that could be used to trigger the message. This is very similar to the IR detectors used in faucets and towel dispensers. I built one for the fun of it and it works…

Good luck ! If you get stuck there is quite a good tutorial series here on Element14: Jeremy Blum Arduino Tutorials which may be of some help to you. There is also a good cookbook available by Michael…

Note that there appears to be a newer third edition of that book out which you may want to look out for:

    Arduino Cookbook, 3rd Edition - O'Reilly Media

The third edition doesn't appear to be on Safari Books Online as yet so I can't tell what's new in it as far as the wave shield and PIR sensor examples.

The second edition has an example based on the following two PIR sensors:

    https://www.sparkfun.com/products/retired/8630

    https://www.parallax.com/product/555-28027

however it is pretty simple example and can easily be adapted.

The only real downside to the sensor you have at the moment is the lack of a data sheet on it so you may have to do a little more work to find out the connections etc. As a novice, then perhaps try to purchase parts with data sheets and code examples that can help get you started e.g.:
