Project14 | Off the Shelf: Take a Project Off the Shelf and Start Working on It!

 

 

The theme this month is Off the Shelf.   The idea is to take a project that's been sitting on the shelf and start working on it. You could revive a half- finished project and get it closer to the finish line.  This is a great opportunity to find an excuse to start working on something that you never got around to finishing and by doing so giving new life to a project.   You can also take any project you've worked on in the past, and do something different from it.    Let us know the story behind your original project and what motivated you to continue working on it.

 

This contest may appeal to you if you are the type of person that gets a lot of joy from starting new projects.  When starting a project, there’s a lot of joy and excitement in taking a new idea and working to turn it into something real. The potential, in the beginning, is unlimited. With time, however, its natural for your initial enthusiasm fades.  What was once a fun, new project turns into a chore. And before you know it, you find yourself moving on to something else, leaving your previous project abandoned in the graveyard of unfinished work. Or, maybe, you have a project that has languished on your to-do list for months, becoming something you’ll “get back to when you have time.” With this contest you have an opportunity to break this cycle of getting an idea, starting a project, and then never finishing it!

Be Original
Stick to the Theme
  • You could come up with a clever name that make's your project memorable!
    • This project is your baby! Part of the fun of bringing something new into the world is coming up with a name.
  • Your project could introduce something new or that is not commercially available or affordable!
  • If you have an idea for a project that doesn't fit the current theme then submit your idea in the comments section of the monthly poll.
List the Steps
Submit Video Proof
  • Provide the steps you took to complete your project (text, video, or images).
    • This could be a step by step how-to-guide, vlog, schematics, coding, napkin drawings, voice narration, or whatever you think will be useful!
  • If it doesn't work that's fine, this is more about the journey than the end product.
  • A short video is all that is required but you can shoot as much video as you like.
  • You are encouraged to be creative and have as much fun as possible!

About Project14
Directions

Every month you'll have a new poll where you'll get to decide an upcoming project competition, based on your interests, that will take place a couple of months in advance. Themes are broad in scope so that everyone can participate regardless of skill set.

 

What are Monthly Themes?

  • Every month (around the 14th of each month) a new theme will be posted on Project14.
  • Submit your ideas (proposals) for your projects to get feedback from the rest of the community.
  • Submit a project entry in the Theme space once you start working on it.

 

What are Monthly Theme Polls?

  • Every month (around the 14th of each month) there is a project theme poll.
  • Vote on which project competition you want to see for the following upcoming theme.
    • The themes voted on during the previous poll decided the upcoming theme.
    • If you submit an idea for a theme that is not used then it can still be used in a future poll.
  • Themes comments and ideas from the comments section of the project theme poll.

Step 1: Log in or register on element14, it's easy and free.

Step 2: Post in the comments section below to begin a discussion on your idea. Videos, pictures and text are all welcomed forms of submission.

Step 3: Submit a blog post of your progress on your project by the end of the month.  You are free to submit as many blog entries as you like until the beginning of the next theme.

 

Be sure to include video proof of your project!

  • Wow, I have so many shelved projects !!!!

    There are 2 that bubble up to the surface.

     

    Shelved Project #1  -  My project is to wire a joystick into the Arduino Nano (used as an IO expander) to control the speed of a DC brushless motor with an airplane propeller attached.

    A Raspberry Pi is the I2C controller. I2C network has a I2C servo hat (plus other unused sensors) and an Arduino Nano on the I2C bus. The DC brushless motor is controlled by the servo hat.  I actually have the hardware built and wired, but keep putting the project priority down. It has been about 4 years to get to this one.

     

    Shelved Project #2 - Refit a scale model electric car chassis to run from a Raspberry Pi.

    It just so happens I have a RC car, on hand, used for this month's project for radio control competition. RC Toy Hack - RC car rescue/restore/recycle/retrofit .   ( Please check out the project and leave comments )

    I'd remove the radio controls and Arduino Nano, and use a Raspberry Pi as a controller, a Pi- Plate MotorPlate  https://pi-plates.com/motorr1/ ,  a I2C servo hat , and a webcam to start with.

    Its a shelved project because I've had the Raspberry Pi, MotorPlate, webcam , and Servo hat for awhile , intending to start a Donkey car build sometime. Another multi year procrastination.
