Monthly Theme Poll

This poll is now closed.  You voted for Going Green and it will launch on June 14, 2017!

Please visit Project14 | You Decide the Next Monthly Project Competition! to continue the conversation and vote on the next project competition.

This will be the new place to discuss ideas and vote on project themes moving forward!

How are Monthly Themes selected?

  • On the 14th of every month a new poll will go up with themes to choose from (initial themes and the first two monthly themes were chosen based on feedback from Top Members)*
  • Comments will be used to decide themes for upcoming polls.
  • If you like an idea for a theme you can increase the odds that it will be used in a poll by "liking", "commenting", or "marking it helpful".
  • The poll will close on the 14th of the following month at which time it will be replaced by a new poll.
  • The poll will decide the monthly project competition for the next following month.

How do you submit your own Project14 idea?

  • Present your theme idea in the comments section of the monthly poll
    • If you think of an idea for a monthly project competition theme you can select the final option to vote a new idea which you present in the comments section.
    • You can also vote for an existing theme idea in the monthly poll and submit as many monthly theme ideas as you like in the comments section.
  • If you would like to present an idea but would like feedback from other community members first, you can start a new discussion thread.

Have an idea of your own for a Monthly Theme?

Use the comments below to give community members more ideas to vote on!

These are all great topics, if they are not selected right away, they shouldn't be completely discarded. Maybe the Project14 page could keep a running list of all ideas.

"Home-made test instrument sounds good. I'd do that one (but then I can cheat because it's on the go already)."

Getting a head start is perfectly acceptable

wacky automation device or Rube Goldberg machine - like the box with a toggle switch - when you turn it on the box opens and turns off the switch.

I like that one ....needs to have something clever about…

Home-made test instrument sounds good. I'd do that one (but then I can cheat because it's on the go already).

Cool LED display. What does 'display' mean? Is that anything as long as it incorporates LEDs and displays something? Would an LED-based analog clock display fit? Or a giant bargraph? Or does it mean putting on a display - like with lighting, etc.

Analog control system is good as well (as long as I can do it with transistors), though it's a bit open-ended. Does anything with feedback count? A Hi-Fi amplifier, for example, can be regarded as an analog control system.

I'd skip the video blog one. Too much programming for my liking.

Don't know about the wacky automation - could be fun. Would be a challenge to get a real electronic slant on it, though an electro-mechanical bias is perfectly ok as a one-off (indeed, it would probably interest a lot of people).

I'd add clock and musical instrument to what you've got there. Hardly original ideas, but they're really good vehicles for creative and imaginative expression. The way they are done often give you an interesting insight into the person doing it and their interests.

All of the above - anything goes

Sure - even a simple op-amp circuit can be an analog control system - whatever you (and the judges) like

"I'd skip the video blog one. Too much programming for my liking."

It could be any accessory, Bluetooth mic, LED lights, etc. doesn't need to have software at all.

A new spin on an interesting device should be acceptable

Maybe I should have had some idea of an actual project before suggesting a topic.
