About Project14
Monthly Themes
Monthly Theme Poll

Congratulations to fvan for Project Portfolio Badge ,  dougw for Geeked Out Business Cards , and shabaz for Build your own Torch/Flashlight!

You are the winners of the  Geeky Gadgets project competition from Project14!

You win a $100 shopping cart from any element14 transactional site!

It's time to announce the winners of the second monthly project competition from Project14 , Geeky Gadgets.  This competition coincided with Geek Pride Day on May 25th, and produced some really great content, whether it was letting the community's collective Geek flag fly by Celebrating Geek Pride with Geeky Gadgets (This competition coincided with Star Wars Day, Towel Day for Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and gave us the opportunity to talk about Data from the Goonies) , taking a look back at some of the awesome  Star Wars vs Star Trek  projects produced by our community members in the past (rumor has it one of danzima interview questions before being accepted to join the element14 team was whether he liked Star Wars or Star Trek), adding some geeky projects such as a Geeked Out Business Cards or Project Portfolio Badge to let the rest of the community know that Project14 has arrived, and shabaz stepping up to the plate to encourage more people to submit Project14 project entries by showing people how they could Build your own Torch/Flashlight!

Here is an up close look at the first place winners of the second Project14 Electronics & Design Competition:

There weren't as many entries or complete entries as with Techno Toys but the content provided by all three of these make them worthy winners.  Project Portfolio was the universal consensus for what a Project14 winner should look like.  It's also been the most popular Project14 project on the community since the program began!

We've now done two of these competitions and learned a lot in the process.  The program is continuing to mature and would be nothing without the support of the community members.

Founders Badges

Because badges are how we roll here in the community,  e14megan  made Founders Badges for the following founders of Project14:

Special thanks to the following community members for making this possible:

balearicdynamics , bwelsby , COMPACT ,  computerguy101 , DAB,  dougw , dragonstyne , dweb98 , fisher0251 , gam3t3ch , ipv1 , Jan Cumps , jkutzsch , jw0752 , lkornel , mayermakes ,  mcb1 , mconners , michaelwylie , mike_lm , ninjatrent , ntewinkel , oisinogorman , oksbwn , retrogamer , RParkerE , satyavrat , shabaz , splash07s , toukomputer , Workshopshed , rachaelp , gadget.iom , Instructorman , Molham , jlangbridge , jc2048 , koudelad , the-dubster , carmelito , pettitda , sunnyiut , beacon_dave , gpolder , nandohila , dwinhold , hlipka , sleuz , Fred27 ,  jarain_78 ,  rhe123 , gelmi , volly , cybermah , rsc , jack.chaney56 , sakthi.1260 , fvan , jomoenginer , terrypokorny , armour999 , and tech_nut81 .

And Finally, as a Midwesterner it feels strange to say this....

"I'm from the Midwest. We were told it's not polite to talk about yourself." - Don Draper

...but I asked e14megan to give me a badge  tariq.ahmad .

image

I'm no lone wolf, and I had the support of lots of people here so I asked her to give them all badges too starting with herself  e14megan.  The program is only possible if the people here support it (in addition to the support of community members) so the following people get Founders badges too: danzima, flyhaf1, e14phil , Sarribas , cstanton , plowe , pchan , randogless , Dudley , kellyhensen , e14mindi , and summerella .

Thank you for supporting Project14 with your likes, participation, and suggestions.

As long as we continue listening to the community members (they know a lot more than we do) I have no doubt that this program has a promising future!

Because this is Project14, we tried to be as inclusive as possible, if we forgot anyone contact either myself tariq.ahmad or e14megan  and we'll look into it.

Mentors Badges

One of the things we wanted to do with this program is to encourage support from community members for people who are struggling with their projects or are new to the community.

The following members have been awarded mentor badges:  dougw , DAB , balearicdynamics , Workshopshed , beacon_dave , shabaz , ntewinkel , gadget.iom , rachaelp , mcb1 and jw0752

Mentors keep on doing what you're doing!

You are what makes this program unique!

If anybody mentioned is missing their badge/s, be sure to poke me. Our system's ability to track who received what badges is less than perfect, and it's hard to check if anyone was overlooked. ... On a…

LED lighting is a solution to overcome inefficient lighting design.

Australia were heading down the path of no tungsten lamps and honestly all the alternatives were poor LED lamps.

    One complaint is downlights.

They were designed so light was directed down to allow a lower finish on gib ceilings, and because of that they need more fittings.

They leak air unless you pay a lot more for the sealed ones, but you're still left with a narrow beam and a shrouded lamp.

I've seen so many people stick those curly energy efficient lamps in them and wonder why it's dark ... they throw the light sideways not downwards.

I have seen Phillips 9w LED used at NZ$18 each and they were brighter than the 100w tunstens they replaced, but 10 of them is $180 so it's not a cheap exercise.

It was done so the widow didn't have to replace lamps, more than efficency.

Most of the LED replacements for dichroic are wider than the 38 deg standard and much lower lumens. Sure they don't get hot but they are not a replacement and not cheap.

In our place we use Osram 50w dichroic (which are equivalent to 65w) along with 35w in the hallway and the whole lighting load at night is about 300w.

As the-dubster pointed out, most of the electicity cost is not lighting, but everything else.

I'm with British Gas and I do use LEDs in all but 3 lights! Even my outside spot is a 50W flood.

    My cost hasn't dropped dramatically but then I DO us an immersion heater for hot water . . . . . . . . .

Given the announcement today from British Gas, I hope more people consider moving to LEDs, and start reducing how much electricity is being used : (

British Gas hikes electricity prices by 12.5%

My shopping cart arrived, I collected it today. Thank you element14!!

    This is what I requested:

    image

It is an eval board for measuring AC power consumption. By default it is accurate to a few percent, but with calibration it can have around +-0.5% accuracy. I don't have the tools to calibrate, but I'm hoping to come up with some alternate ways to calibrate, and hopefully write this up as a project sometime.

Unlike many other eval boards, this one came with a lot of warnings and a lot of paper documentation, because it connects to the mains supply and care is needed. It is quite an interesting board, it uses an MSP430 series processor with 24-bit ADC (so the resolution is high for power measurement), but also the ADC has the ability to have a controlled delay between one channel and the other, to compensate for any delay in a channel, to get more accurate measurements.

    Hey Mark!

Interesting idea, also a tent light that can go into an ultra-dim mode for sleeping could be another use-case if you had a dimming mode.

I'll definitely think about that some more, the new PCB has a control pin, so in theory that could be used but I need to check current consumption.

The team at E14 Community seems to be really working hard and it shows by the number of new things we see. I am glad to be a witness to the evolution.

Stay awesome guys and keep rocking.

    Cheers,

    Great work guys.

I have to say I looked at the challenge and nothing immediately sprang to mind (not that I need a distraction right now), so each of these is a great idea.

    shabaz

One thought I had many years ago while fly fishing at night was a dimmable LED torch.

With your design and some electronics it should be achievable, so I might need to bookmark it.

The badges are a great idea and thanks very much for mine.

    Cheers

I only included people active on Project14 (likes, followed, commented) for Founders badges, e14megan  who is on Project14  with me, the design team, members of the dev team, social media, and managers.

rscasny has done a fantastic job on RoadTests & Reviews , Webinars , and Design Challenges . He's in different areas of the community than me but he's sat right behind me the entire time I've been in the community and rides the same train to the same neighborhood as me.  Its good to have someone that doesn't work too directly with any of the things I'm on so I can have someone to think out loud with, blow off steam with, or get a different perspective on things from.

The community is such a big place that there's multiple people managing all the programs.  I'm on Arduino ,  The Ben Heck Show , and Project14 .     jlucas  is on  STEM Academy , Business of Engineering and working on some programs with e14phil .   e14phil is on Raspberry Pi , Design Challenges , and a bunch of other programs.   I don't work directly with him but he got a badge for liking a piece of content on Project14 before badges were announced.

There is still a formula that was used even if a lot of badges were given.  The badge would be meaningless otherwise.
