In this webinar we will introduce the SimpleLink™ Sub-1 GHz Sensor to Cloud Linux Gateway development kit from Texas Instruments. This kit provides an end-to-end solution that demonstrates how to create a Sub-1 GHz sensor network with an Internet of Things (IoT) gateway solution and cloud connectivity.

We will present the key elements of the whole system, which revolves around the dual-band CC1350 device. Using the new SimpleLink Long Range mode and royalty-free Sub-1 GHz networking stack (based on 802.15.4 standard), we will present a solution which enable devices operating in a Sub-1 GHz network to connect directly to popular cloud services (such as AWS and IBM Bluemix) using a Linux IoT gateway based on the BeagleBone Black platform.

Casey O’Grady is a Product Marketing Engineer for Low Power RF at Texas Instruments (TI) focusing on Bluetooth low energy, Sub-1Ghz, Thread, and Zigbee solutions. Prior to her time in Low Power RF, Casey served as a Technical Sales Associate where she trained in multiple business units within TI. She graduated from the University of Arkansas with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering with a minor in mathematics.

What is the ability of the DUAL mode, did it can works as full SUB1-GHz and BLE peripheral role?
CC1350 supports BLE Beacon (advertisement) mode concurrently with the Sub-1 GHz 15.4 star network. It also supports BLE peripheral connected mode for setup and commissioning of the Sub-1 GHz as well as for over the air software updates. The BLE peripheral connected mode and the Sub-1 GHz network are not working at the same time and device has to alternate between the two.

Could you please elaborate about using MQTT on sub-1 GHz ? If I remember correctly, MQTT relies on the TCP stack.
Sensor To cloud communication system can be broken into two high level components 1. Cloud to gateway communication component 2. Sub1 GHz network communication component. MQTT is not used in the Sub1GHz network, MQTT is used by the Linux gateway to communicate with the cloud application over Wi-Fi or Ethernet connectivity which run TCP stacks.

How secure is the AWS cloud? Do they have access to my data there?
This question should be answered by AWS.

Does the TI 15.4 stack allow for mesh connectivity?
TI 15.4-Stack only offers star networking topology. Thanks to the Sub-1 GHz long range capabilities, the area coverage using this network is very good and it can easily cover a full house or few floors in a building. However customers needing mesh topology can implement their own mesh networking layers above this software. API-MAC layer provides the interface to the MAC layer and is described in the documentation part of the SimpleLink CC13x0 SDK.

about power consumption is it possible to compare it to BLE?
The solution (on the sensor side) is very low power and can work several years on coin cell battery so in that sense it is comparable to BLE. The use-case is different than BLE. Power consumption is also a function of the polling interval and the reporting interval of data by the sensors. These can be configured as part of the out of the box software and of course can be programed in a design to achieve the desired tradeoff.

How is the performance and how many sensor nodes can be connected to such a gateway
The radio sensitivity of CC1350 is -110dbm for 50kbps and -119dbm for 5kbps modes. Both are supported by the TI 15.4 stack.
In terms of number of nodes, TI is testing the CC1350 15.4 stack solution with over 50 nodes with MAC layer security enabled. With MAC layer security disabled and the application running on the Linux host, (note application layer can be encrypted, this would have to implemented by the developers) several thousand nodes per network can be supported, depending on factors such as traffic profile, etc. which should be taken into account so that the communication is reliable.

Possible to design sensor node using with CC1350 + CC1190 and work well with 15.4 stack?
Yes
But in an area there are 20-40 K nodes. How can we do a performant system? Its a big project with 1.5 million meters in 5 cities. How many gateways to be used? How will they deal only their nodes without interference? Presently We plan to use LoRaWAN but power consumption is high. (one person asked all these questions)
I recommend that the customer reach out to TI for a closer look and discussion on their specific needs
