where would be the best place to look for the basic ins and outs of the technology we are interested in

Hi, my name is Mike Macropoulos and i am very interested in taking my first steps farther into IT development, and dev kits. I was curious where, and what is specifically needed in order to program, and get involved with products under discussion, and development. i am A+ IT certified and would like to know future steps in order to get involved. If anyone had any information on what exactly to get a grasp on like programming languages, and some need to know insight web pages that would make my search easier i would very much appreciate it. I am looking to get up to key with my IT knowledge in order to tinker with these toys as well. thank you.

    Hi Mike,

In terms of hardware, not much is needed to get some familiarity with programming for dev boards. Often just a PC and a USB cable and the dev board is needed (some boards have more requirements).

Ultimately the source for detailed information will be the manufacturer of the board.

Choosing a board depends on what you want it to do, they all meet different needs.

For learning, you might want to follow two tracks - once for programming and learning about the boards, and one for learning about electronics. I'd suggest trying the Arduino Starter Kit ( click for a review here) mainly because it comes with a good textbook that will take people from zero experience to the point of creating some useful projects. It's a very good all-in-one, single resource. For the "learning electronics" track, a book called Getting Started in Electronics by Forrest Mims ||| is old, but quite good.

When it comes to boards and the microcontrollers on them, there is a huge variety, for different needs as mentioned. The Arduino is like the pizza of the embedded world - easy to enjoy, straightforward and popular. Once you're familiar with that, you'll feel comfortable trying others since most of the principles are the same.
