Would You Be Interested in a Webinar on the simple open real-time Ethernet (SORTE) protocol?

We are considering doing a webinar called "New simple open real-time Ethernet (SORTE) protocol supports 4µs cycle time."

Here's the summary:

"When we talk about industrial or real-time Ethernet, we often refer to industrial Ethernet standards like EtherCAT, PROFINET, Ethernet/IP, Sercos III and Ethernet PowerLink. These industrial Ethernet standards support a minimum cycle time in the tens of microseconds range – to give a specific example, PROFINET IRT v2.3 supports a cycle time as low as 31.25µs.  Supporting a cycle time below 10µs opens up a totally new way of using real-time Ethernet for industrial applications."

I read the blog and followed the link in it to the reference design page which in turn draws the reader's attention to the "Important notice for TI designs" - from which I have extracted the following :

You are authorized to use, copy and modify any individual TI Resource only in connection with the development of applications that include

the TI product(s) identified in such TI Resource.

So it's not open source, at least not as the term is generally understood - if TI mean something different they shouldn't cite the 'Important notice' document.

Just for the record, are TI happy for me to implement this protocol on an FPGA or other non TI hardware ?

On behalf of Thomas Mauer, Texas Instruments:

Thank you for your comment. TI developed this simple-open real-time Ethernet (SORTE) protocol as an open source protocol. It operates on PRU-ICSS, available in many SitaraTm processors from TI, leveraging the powerful real-time interface. SORTE was released in the reference design and the PRU firmware provided in the source code allows you to create your own Ethernet protocol with PRU-ICSS. For more details, please refer to the following blog post I wrote in November.

You should make it clear that SORTE is a TI proprietary protocol. It is not clear from TI's website how it may be used - it is, according to TI, "released as a TI Reference Design" which would imply that it is only authorised/licensed for use with the TI products in that design.

Nothing wrong with all that - if it's their idea they can do what they like with it - but it should be made clear in promotional material.

I'm not interested in a Webinar - it took about 5 minutes on the web to get  a good enough grasp of what it is and how it's being offered for me to know that I'll be waiting to see if it gains any traction and a more secure IP status before I'd want to play.

Any one can roll their own Ethernet protocol  - its good fun - a webinar about that might be  a bit more interesting.

    MK
