PYNQ is an open source project started by Xilinx, which fuses the productivity of Python with the acceleration provided by programmable logic within the Zynq / Zynq MPSoC. Until recently, a programmable logic solution required advanced digital design skills which limited its accessibility to software developers.  PYNQ is a game-changer because it enables the performance of programmable logic provided by Xilinx heterogeneous SoCs to be leveraged using Python, without the need to learn the digital design skills.  Python is one of the most popular programming languages in the world, and a language that is very familiar to Pi enthusiasts.   Its also the second most popular language on the community, according to the poll below, trailing the C programming language and just ahead of the Arduino programming environment.

 

Python Productivity for Zynq, or PYNQ, has the ability to present programmable logic circuits as hardware libraries called overlays. These overlays are analogous to software libraries. A software engineer can select the overlay that best matches their application. The overlay can be accessed through an application programming interface (API). Using existing community overlays, this course will examine how a beginner can experiment with neural networks using PYNQ on Ultra96. The course will then point you to the best resources to begin your own PYNQ journey!

Join us for a hands-on workshop with Adam Taylor, author of the MicroZed Chronicles, who will take you from Zero to Hero with using the PYNQ-Z2 board.  Over the course of three sessions, you'll learn everything you need to know to get started and build an embedded vision application.  No experience required.

 

What You'll Need to Participate:

 

This workshop combines 3 build-along workshops with Adam Taylor with "homework" assignments to do in between each session.   This gives you a chance to apply what you learned during the workshop while preparing you the next session.  Along the way you can earn badges for participation and a prize for the best finished project after the last session. You'll need the following tools to get started:

    I picked "other".  In Refining and the Chemical industry, about the only language used is VBA for Excel macros.  In turn, I use VB.Net for web application development with JavaScript for the client side.  This enables a few other folks to support it as well.  Since we locked in some conventions and made a common class to leverage code, it is very efficient development.

     

    For Maker work, it depends on the platform:

    Although my least efficient language, I prefer C++ for BeagleBone and Raspberry Pi for advanced builds.  I've gotten more efficient recently by mounting a Windows drive in Linux and actually using Visual Studio on my PC.  I compile to a non-mounted folder in Linux.

     

    Arduino C and its IDE are very productive.  I hope they don't change a thing.

     

    For Game Development in Unity, I enjoy C#.  I've gone away from Java altogether in trade for C#.

     

    In general, I find Python the greatest marketing ever.  I still can't figure why so many people started porting libraries to it when they could have simply continued to hone VB.  But it's here to stay and at least it's readable.  But, for the most part, it seems like a stripped down VB to me wrapping around peoples c++ libraries.

     

    In 96, I had a chemical engineering instructor make me write a project in FORTRAN.  I already wrote it in C for him.  I said, I'm pretty sure FORTRAN is extinct - he said "No it's what all engineers use".  25 years later - Never met one engineer that coded in FORTRAN.  :-)

    VBA is essentially VB6. It is very good for programming complex macros, especially when controlling the power of Excel.

    I remember writing one that automatically accessed the internet to download the daily hockey scores and automatically update our hockey pool statistics. A Saturday project. I would not attempt such a project in another language - it just wouldn't be worth the much more extensive effort.

    Python still has a long way to go to catch up to VB.

    In 1996 FORTRAN was long past its heyday. In the 70's and 80's, most of the programs I wrote were in FORTRAN or MACRO (the assembly language for DEC PDP11 computers)

    I never wrote another FORTRAN program after we switched away from DEC computers, although some of our code was ported to PCs.
