Webinar Poll:  Which LoRa Application Interests You the Most?

On June 10th, 2020 at 11 AM CT //  4 PM GMT: Join us as we welcome back Arduino to the element14 community!  Andrea Richetta,  Head of the Pro /IoT Market will take us on an LPWAN Journey where LoRa Meets Arduino:

  • LoRa Meets Arduino, a Journey in the LPWAN World

During this webinar,  Andrea Richetta, head of the Pro/IoT market at Arduino will give an overview of the LPWAN world, focusing on LoRa and the available solutions from Arduino.  You’ll learn how to create a complete end to end solution using Arduino hardware (boards, shields and a gateway) and the Arduino IoT Cloud.  We will be giving away a pair of MKR WAN 1310 boards to 5 attendees who ask the best questions.  The MKR WAN 1310, brings in a series of improvements when compared to its predecessor, the MKR WAN 1300. While still based on the MicrochipRegistered SAMD21 low power processor, the Murata CMWX1ZZABZ LoRaRegistered module, and the MKR family’s characteristic crypto chip (the ECC508), the MKR WAN 1310 includes a new battery charger, a 2MByte SPI Flash, and improved control of the board’s power consumption.  Additionally,  Arduino will be offering Arduino branded swag such as T-shirts, hoodies, and possibly mugs!

It might be good for asset tracking. It is a low data rate application and the low power and long range are ideal for asset tracking.

I'll second dougw but narrow my scope to asset condition tracking. Some of our assets aren't used every week so they sit in the yard almost forgotten. It gets longer during the winter. They either have…

A LoRa module with GPS which could directly communicate with LoRa sattelite in space could be possible in the future. No need for Fancy internet Gateway just to communicate small amount of data.

I attended a webinar where they discussed about LoRa based sattelite.

Of couse security of data is a first focus nowadays as the hacking is becoming prevalant.!!

Yes there is mix of devices. All depends on what you are looking for.

There is another non-GPS option called YABBY WIFI. This device uses a WiFi sniffer to scan for WiFi access points and the signal strength from each one, then sends a  triangulated position via 4G (LTE Cat M1) / NB-IoT rather than LoRaWan. I presume they see 4G (LTE Cat M1) / NB-IoT as the more prevalent comms mode for urban areas rather than LoRaWan.

A number of these appear to be relying on GPS for geolocation though ?

The 'Guppy LoRa Tag' appears to use LoRaWAN based geolocation services and hence the longer quoted battery lifespan as it doesn't require to power a GPS Rx module and increased time to location fix.

Presumably though this requires sufficient ownership of suitably located LoRaWAN gateway devices, (or subscription to LoRaWAN gateway provider data services), which may limit some applications.

LoRa asset tracking COTS products already exist and work pretty well. Here's one example:

I'll second dougw but narrow my scope to asset condition tracking.  Some of our assets aren't used every week so they sit in the yard almost forgotten.  It gets longer during the winter.  They either have starting batteries or batteries for electric brakes - or both.  A low power, long range monitor is ideal for knowing the battery state.
