Teacher: Denise Wright
Lesson Plan : Ocean Bay Middle School, Myrtle Beach, SC
What ages and/or grade-level(s) it's aimed toward
The microbit lessons we used in our coding group were appropriate for , middle school, grades 6 through 8th.
• What subject/s does it cover
The subjects that were covered, are STEM, computational thinking, and python coding
• What are the project goals
The goal of the project was to introduce students to python coding for the first time. Students were assigned an easy project which was to scroll their name in basic python.
It was then encouraged for students to progress and try to create more complex programs with more difficult code. Students set personal goals, but, several expressed an in interest in using the microbit for gaming.
• Step-by-Step instructions including any print-outs, bill of materials (BOM)
We are currently one to one chromebook school. Students were first introduced to the python microbit editor. We learned together how the micro bit worked. One of the first steps were for students was to scroll their name across the red LED’S.
See the micro python editor screenshot below:

Students were able to read the code and figure out to remove “Hello World” and insert their name. We then discussed that the microbit had an image library. Students, were able to scroll their name but, also, change the images they were viewing on the LEDs.

Exciting… we were on our way and falling in love with coding !
Students spent the next several weeks exploring the python editor and the drag and drop editor.
They were creating music and playing games on their microbits !
