Waking up on the fourth day of camp I was ready to expand our program and take things to the next level. What I didn't expect was to read this...
After a few calls, I was saddened to discover that camp had to be cancelled. We simply couldn't have students on the campus without functional plumbing. Even after water was restored several days later, the city remained on a boil water order for nearly a week. Businesses and programs were forced to shut down and water had to be distributed as if we were receiving disaster relief.
I was extremely disappointed to discover that the program would be cut short and that we wouldn't be able to use all of the materials the students didn't have a chance to start on.
But then some hope! I was contacted by a teacher whose students had been part of my program. They wanted to keep learning! I made arrangements to provide them with the Micro:bits and Kitronik inventors kits but told them that my work with them would be limited now that summer was over and they would need to be self guided. They were eager to take on the challenge!
It has been a week now and the student were able to complete several projects from the kit! This is a real testament to both their determination and eagerness to learn AND the way Kitronik has designed their instructional materials to be student facing. While they won't have their game ready in time for the challenge deadline, they are going to keep working on it regardless:
