Amiga Forever publisher Cloanto releases Amiga emulation package on Google Play for $1

Commodore 64 fans, rejoice! Amiga, in partnership with their Amigo Forever publisher Cloanto, has just announced the immediate availability of an Amiga Forever Essentials package on Google Play for all Android devices. Cloanto worked in conjunction with makers of readily available Amiga emulators for the Android, such as: AnUAE4All, UAE4All2, UAE4Droid, Omega 500, and others.

 

"We are grateful for the fact that Google Play is open-minded about emulators and GPL components. As such, Android was our ideal candidate for the initial release in the Amiga Forever Essentials series," said Cloanto President Mike Battilana during a recent press release.

 

Amiga, the wildly popular 1980s and 90s line of home computers, remains an icon in the retro-computing world for being the world’s first fully capable multimedia computer. Some of its greatest assets included fully animated graphics from 4096 to 16.8 million colors, four sound channels, a myriad of expansion devices, and multitasking abilities on a mere 250K of address space - all of which were unprecedented at the time. The Amiga line of computers gave way to the beginning of early video production, audio tracking, and computer gaming at an inexpensive price that made it a successful alternative to Apple and IBM computers.

The move to Google Play will allow Android users to revel in Commodore’s classic line of games, the likes of which include: Defender of the Crown, Speedball 2, Syndicate, Another World, Worms, and many more. By partnering with existing emulator developers, Cloanto ensures that system files (officially licensed ROM and OS files included) are auto detected. The Forever Essentials package will also include a few add-ons, such as Workbench 1.3 and the First Demos package to give Androids a head start with Amiga emulation. Cloanto also explains that the Amiga Essentials package is the first of many more planned emulation packages.

 

The Amiga Forever Essentials app for Android is now available for only $1 USD on Google Play. Ultimately, Cloanto President Mike Battilana hopes the availability of his company’s emulation software for Android will encourage the acceptance of emulation packages on all other devices.

  • I never got into the Amiga, but I had a friend who really loved his.  He liked to operating system and its ease at doing multi-tasking long before many of the other systems could support it in any semblence of real time.

     

    If anyone wants to see what an ancient machine looked like, I can see some interest in running the emulator.  I doubt few people would have any of the old software still around to really test the app.
