Father's Day Badge-a-Thon: Day of the Dad

And here we are! Happy Father's Day, everyone!image

We've had quite a rollercoaster ride of patriarchal point winning, and now it's time to round things out with one last Father's Day Badge-a-Thon badge.

Firstly, of course, you need to be proudly sporting the previous days' badges before you can land this one:

  • Day One: June 13th - Father's Day Badge-a-Thon: Shed Dweller
  • Day Two: June 14th - Father's Day Badge-a-Thon: Boys' Toys
  • Day Three: June 15th - Father's Day Badge-a-Thon: DIY Ninja
  • Day Four: June 16th - Father's Day Badge-a-Thon: The IoT of Chaps
  • Day Five: June 17th - Father's Day Badge-a-Thon: The Maker
  • Day Six: June 18th - Father's Day Badge-a-Thon: The Maker
  • Day Seven: June 19th - Father's Day Badge-a-Thon: Day of the Dad

Got 'em? Good.

To round things out, let's get the dads involved. Today you're tasked with something nicely celebratory.

  • Post a status update with any "Happy Father's Day"-type message of your choice, and...

  • Update your avatar to a photo of your dad, granddad, or other fatherly figure who's had a strong (ideally positive) influence on your life.

The seven Father's Day Badges will remain live for a further week, given there's quite a lot to do if you want to bag all seven, after which they'll close down and you'll have to wait until next year.

In the meantime, have a great Father's Day, and give the old man a slap on the back from everyone here at element14!

Hi Spanner, This was a fun exercise. My only children were Japanese exchange students that I hosted, so I basically cheated the system by renting my kids for a year. Still I had loads of fun with them…

He used to drive all kinds of tanks, armoured cars and crazy military vehicles when he was in the service, and it all came back to him immediately! The commander was a bit petrified at first, when he floored it in the tank and slid it around the corners, but even he had a great time with us in the end!

well that's a tough one, my dad certainly had an influence and I would say he set me on the path but a life long friend Pete Scargill (See Scargill's Tech Blog ), I have known Pete since I was 16 when I first showed up at the "Newcastle Personal Computer Society" and was instantly hooked. Remember this was 1974 so no PCs back then.

So I would have to say Pete had a big impact on what I have become today,

But my Dad being a tool maker and mum working at Solatron building electronics assemblies probably prompted them to get me electronics kits, mechano and other "Maker style kits" for Christmas etc. and provide the environment for me to experiment. I do remember my young self having more disassembled electronics crap in my bedroom than any toys for sure.

So unfortunately I am no longer able to celebrate with Dad as he passed a few years back but there are plenty of fond memories. This would be one of the earliest pictures of me with my dad. I'm the blond on the right lol.

And to complete this week out, here is Dad as my Avatar for this week.

Remember that being a Dad can be much different then being a Father.  And for those of you who are StepDads, Mentor Dads, or just that cool neighbor down the street who works on electronics and always acts like a Dad, it is how we affect the world and the youth that makes this a special day!
