Father's Day Badge-a-Thon: DIY Ninja

It simply won't do for dad to let some tradesman come in and fix things. I mean, what would the other dads say?image

No no. Rolling up your DIY sleeves and taking things apart to, A) Fix the hell out of them, or B) Make them even better (I don't think there's a C), is there?) is a time honoured tradition that separates the men from the boys, the wheat from the chaff, and the ambitiously curious from the nervously realistic.

Are you a DIY Ninja? I already suspect the answer to that is a solid, hammer-wielding yes, otherwise you probably wouldn't be spending your time on element14 talking about crazy devices you've built and electronics you've melted.

Sadly, it's not me you have to convince. Father's Day is looming, so it's the family you need to reassure of your DIY kung fu.

As my dad always said, "There's a right tool for every job, and it's called a hammer." Can you match the job to the tool, or the tool to the job in the quiz below? If you can, you'll earn one of our grand Father's Day badges that'll determine your status as a DIY Ninja forever more.

Oh, and don't forget -- you can't earn this badge unless you've already performed your fatherly duties by bagging the previous days' badges, so go get them first!

You have until 26th June, 2016, to get all the badges, so don't delay!

  • Day One: June 13th - Father's Day Badge-a-Thon: Shed Dweller
  • Day Two: June 14th - Father's Day Badge-a-Thon: Boys' Toys
  • Day Three: June 15th - Father's Day Badge-a-Thon: DIY Ninja
  • Day Four: June 16th - Father's Day Badge-a-Thon: The IoT of Chaps
  • Day Five: June 17th - Father's Day Badge-a-Thon: The Maker
  • Day Six: June 18th - Father's Day Badge-a-Thon: The Maker
  • Day Seven: June 19th - Father's Day Badge-a-Thon: Day of the Dad

TOP TIPS? Don't feel obliged, but if you've got any top DIY tips, why not add them as a comment on this post? I've a couple that I'm going to add in, which will revolutionise your future efforts when destroying the house!

My father in law had a mill in the back yard (lived in rural U.P. Michigan), and had to sharpen his own blade, mostly because the 42" circular blade was a tad expensive to replace. Jack

What's supposed to happen when you click "Mark quiz"? I got a "go to next page" link but then ended up back here? 10/10 by the way, but a couple were an educated guess. I feel a little guilty that I'm…

My old man gave me the DIY bug many many moons ago, being both skilled with his hands and tighter than a Gnat's chuff . . .

I learned the hard way about the difference between a wood chisel and a flat-blade screwdriver though, his tools not mine of course! Now, while the screwdriver can be pressed into service as a rudimentary wood chisel, the same cannot be said for the reverse! (not more than once anyhow)!!

Now Kerf brings back distant memories of my Woodwork O Levels, back when folks would re-sharpen their saw teeth and reset the kerf . . . .

Never done it myself, saws are far too cheap to bother with that nowadays!

#9 tricked me, I immediately thought of a Cow Hitch / Lanyard Hitch for securing something.  Sneaky Element 14 Ninjas!  ;-)  That would be kind of a cool tag, Element14Ninja...

Whenever gluing planks of wood together I always get loads of the glue all over my fingers, I find wiping the glue onto the palms of my hands and rubbing them together gets rid of the glue so that I don't get it all over clean parts of my work or work surfaces, etc.

I got # 8 wrong the first time as I tend to over think things. Isn't it Carbon that gets added to make the carbide or the carbon steel? Great fun! The one tool tip I give to my children and grandkids is to take good care of ones tools so you only have to buy them once. So far I have had mixed results from them. I have several who like to learn things the hard way.
