Thank You Community Members for the 500K!

6 Aug 2017

I just wanted to give a heartfelt thanks to the community members who made this wonderful community possible.  Without your support there wouldn't be a community.  500K is a big number, especially for an online community.  I've been lucky enough to be a part of the element14 community for about a year and a half now.

When I joined the team, I was lucky enough to have gotten to know some people who were around the community before me, and they were able to show me the right way of doing things. I would hear stories of all the people who were around before me and how they helped shape this community into a special place. When the people who helped show me the ropes left, they left me something at my desk, and passed the baton on to me.  It was clear that they loved this element14 community, wanted it to succeed, and understood it wasn't about us, it was about the community members.  The cast of characters may change, but as long as you (the community members not us) remain, that's all that matters.

For my part, I hope that I can shoulder the examples of those who served the community members before me, so that when it becomes my time to pass the baton, I'm able to leave the same spirit those who came before me left for me. Progress is always a zig zag and we're not going to always get everything right the first time.  I want to reassure the community members that the people that run this community are good people that have the interest of the community members at heart.  I don't know of anything like this that exists. Whenever you trail blaze a new path, there will always be resistance coming from somewhere.  The great thing about being a part of the element14 community is that you're a part of something special that will outlive your role in it.

I know that there's a lot of work still to be done.  We want to evolve the community around the community members so that when people register they stay active.   If you have ideas on how to improve the community feel free to reach out directly to me or anyone else on the team.

As long as we continue to listen to the community members, the community will continue to thrive.

Thank you once again Community Members!

This is by far the best community I have found. Members and staff are helpful without patronising someone who asks a question. I look at answers to questions on a lot of other forums and am disappointed…

    Awesome post tariq.ahmad .

Element14 and the rest of us who use this site are lucky to have someone like you to wrangle the cats,  meself included, and keep the Project14 and other site community events on track. The work you do on this site is nothing sort of amazing and I could not even image the amount of work that goes on in the background to keep a site like this humming along.

I want to reassure the community members that the people that run this community are good people that have the interest of the community members at heart.  I don't know of anything like this that exists.

Some say it takes a village to raise a kid, but it really takes a community of talented and dedicated folks to ensure a site with posts coming in from all over the globe up and running.   The talented and dedication of folks behind the scenes at element14 is quite evident once one enters the site.  To borrow a quote from a recent Keanu Reeves appearance at E3, "You're Breathtaking!".

There was a recent post on the site by some who stated the following regarding their impression of element14.

"I was expecting an Adafruit or Sparkfun type site."

I did not respond to this post, however my thought regarding this comment is "good, I'm glad it is not like the others".   The sites this poster listed are good sites and there are others that are similar in respect to design contests, however nothing can is like what element14 offers and that is a good thing.  The difference is what attracts me to the site.

I am just humbled to be allowed to participate on this site, despite going off on a tangent periodically,  and feel I have grown both technically and personally by being involved.

When the day comes that you decide to step away from your duties with element14, you'll certainly leave Shaq sized shoes to fill by the next person. You certainly have a set a high bar for any that follow you as well as for the rest of us.

Thanks for your hardwork and dedication to this site.

    Cheers,

    Jon

Thanks jomoenginer,   it really means a lot.   When I left college and looked for my first job,  I never imagined my career would take me into tech, first as part of a Chicago tech start up, and now here on element14 community.   At this point,  its hard now to imagine working in any other industry, in some form or shape, other than tech.  Its fast-paced, forward thinking, and the energy that creates is addictive and while there's something to be said for any line of work, its something that I would be loathe to let go.  Endless amounts of coffee are required just to keep up with how fast things move here, and my experiences in other areas of tech.  If I'm gone for even a week, it's mind boggling how much amazing things you miss out on.  I've gotten the chance to work with/for some amazing people, love what I do, and the members were amazing before I got here.

From our perspective, the part of the job that is most satisfying is the amazing community members, who are really what inspire us to put in the extra effort.  I love what we have going on here, especially since the same team has gotten a chance to work together for a while now, and have learned to accept one another's idiosyncrasies.  image  Its been fun to see the puzzle pieces come together.   You always want to savor in every experience you get to be a part of, early in my career I was part of something special as well, but when you're in the middle of things and things happening so fast you need to remember to step back and just appreciate the present. That is what the post was about. In my younger years, its something that I wish I did more of, which is also part of the journey we all go through I suppose.

Going back to when this was originally posted, we hit a milestone and it seemed to be a special moment, that should be called out, so we could all savor the moment.  A wise person once told me that you got to celebrate the great moments, because you're going to experience difficulties, and those moments of joy are going to be the things that help you tough it out and push your way through when things get difficult (and they always do).  What was this moment about and who should we thank for it?   The answer was obvious, the community members. Time turns its pages on everything sooner a later,   I am grateful to have gotten to experience this chapter with you all.  Engineering is unlike anything else because you use both sides of your brain, and the result can be seen in all the amazing work you guys do.  You guys are the stars,  I am just basking in the glory of the amazing work that you do.  image
