For Christmas I gift the gift of …….

….Sight.

Over the years I have first  hand experience of the unimaginable pain of getting the spark from a spot welding gun in my eye and having the debris removed. I bare the scar on my eye to prove my stupidity. Fortunately it never affected my sight. I was lucky many aren’t. Statistics for America say that there are 8000 eye injuries  a year. Extrapolate that to take in the rest of the world and that number will run into hundreds of thousands. We have all been in situations where PPE is mandatory and often it is the minimum requirement and often that does not include safety glasses. So whilst most would not regard safety glasses as a tool they are a tool in your armoury for keeping safe. There are a lot of different types of safety specs ranging from standard safety specs through to laser safe glasses. Not the first thing you would spend $50 on? Perhaps it should be.

Sounds like that would have been nasty and you were lucky it hit your glasses and not your cheek. I use a full face mask when I’m working on my wood lathe because sometimes bits of wood break loose and they really hurt if the catch you.  Unfortunately we often don’t think about appropriate PPE until something happens. You would think I learnt my lesson and to be fair in my garage workshop I’m usually pretty good  but if I am doing a bit of DIY around the house quite often my wife says “shouldn’t you be wearing goggles or something?” And she’s usually right.

Safety glasses are invaluable.  I have a right eye because I was actually wearing a pair.  I took a washer - launched by a table saw - right to the center of the right lens of a pair.  It was like getting punched full force in the eye but I can still see.

I agree, you only have two eyes and they are  not replaceable.

    Always wear eye protection.
