[ARCHIVED] How Are You Using AI in Engineering (If at All)?

AI is changing the way people work but what about engineers and technical professionals like you? We’re starting a discussion to explore if, how, and why (or why not!) engineers are using AI in their daily workflows.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on any of the following:

Do You Use AI Tools?

  • If yes, what do you use?

    Again, I should not say this, but AI seems to be in wrong hands. See how much misuse it has in creating fake images of people. 

    One solution to such problem is to have better policy and rules. But who would do that? Governments, right? But it seems that politicians themselves lacks the knowledge of what AI is and what it can do better. How to contribute to the development of AI in positive way.?

    One good solution to this issue could be to use AI for increasing production and save time that engineers spend on different tools. Couple of them I have mentioned above already. This will create better use of AI. 

    I remember doing one project where it was about automatic code correction for example if I forget the semicolon or comma AI engine will do that for me. For example in below code if I forget the comma or bracket it can do that for me knowing it it a "C/C++" code accordingly.

    I have heard about an AI based PCB making tools. One of them is flux.ai that is what I know using AI to create PCBs. I did not give it a try yet. I also know that some companies are working on such tools that can help create PCB using AI.

    I use it in MS-office to create documents for voice-based typing.

    I definitely find things more rewarding when it comes from your own efforts.  I guess in general if there is something I take pride in I am less likely to give it to AI.  If it's an area or discipline I don't care too much about, then I have no problem tossing it over the fence for AI to handle.

  • I do not use AI in any way.  I am happy getting my answers from the actual reference materials that hold the real data.  I have developed searching skills that pretty reliably find the materials that I need. It has worked for me for years and I feel that it will continue to work for me in the future.

    When designing a board or writing software, I will consult user guides and manufacturers examples.  I find these to be mostly correct and reliable.  I tend to be a build from scratch sort of engineer.  I prefer this method, as I would rather create my own errors as opposed to scratching my head trying to decipher someone else's errors.

    That sounds like a really grounded way to use it as a kind of fast track for getting up to speed or unlocking fresh perspectives. Are there any subjects or problems recently where AI gave you an especially helpful insight?

    And I totally get what you mean about resisting the urge to hand over the creative process. What helps you draw that line? Is it about maintaining originality, or do you find the creative part more satisfying when it’s fully yours?
