[ARCHIVED] How Are You Using AI in Engineering (If at All)?

AI is changing the way people work but what about engineers and technical professionals like you? We’re starting a discussion to explore if, how, and why (or why not!) engineers are using AI in their daily workflows.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on any of the following:

    That’s a really creative use of AI. I hadn’t heard of it being used to support aesthetic decisions with available materials before! Are you using any particular tools for that, like generative design or visualisation platforms?

    And using it to dig deeper into chemical processes like making conductive ink sounds super practical. Has it helped you discover anything you might have missed otherwise? I'd love to hear more about how you're applying it in that context especially where it’s been surprisingly helpful (or not so helpful).

    Wow, it sounds like you’re really exploring a broad range of uses from business processes to coaching and even music generation! That’s awesome.

    The point about security really resonates especially that “you don’t know what you don’t know” feeling. Are there specific concerns your team has run into, or is it more of a general caution at this stage?

    Also, I’m curious about your AI experiments with code, are there particular types of scripts or languages you're testing AI with? Would love to hear what’s showing promise and what still feels clunky.

    And the vlog music generation, very cool! Any tools you’ve liked for that?

    That's such a thoughtful way to put it, a coin with two sides! Totally agree that safety and design documentation need to be handled with extra care.

    Your point about smarter PCB design tools is really interesting. Are there any specific software platforms you’ve seen starting to add AI features like wire routing or BOM generation? I’d love to dig into what’s working well in that space.

    Also, voice-based typing, that’s a clever time-saver. Do you use it mostly for emails or documentation, or something else entirely?

  • I generally use AI to get a quick overview on a subject I don't know too well... or to get insights into certain problems.  I have been pretty good at resisting the urge to have it take over the creative process.

    Interesting... to use it for aesthetic purposes... and on a personal note, due to my own limitations with chemistry I can see why self using AI to overcome my shortcomings in that area.
