Switching with transistor versus relay

Element14 has a great YouTube vid on transistors, and I get that transistors are faster than relays and are better in low voltage situations. But I've been trying to custom build a motion sensor that remotely turns on the motor of an animatronic prop. It should be easy enough to activate that motor from the collector side of my transistor. 

 

But because the prop is a distance away (maybe 5-6 feet), it has it's own power supply and a separate ground. All I really need is something to close the circuit on the ground side of the prop motor. So it seems to me that two wires from the prop to a remote relay, NOT a transistor C/E connection, would make more sense. The activated motion sensor would send 3.3v to the relay. Then the relay connects the two wires together and that completes the motor circuit.

 

I've been trying to do this with a transistor switch for days and can not figure out what I should be connecting to the motor two wires.

 

Has anyone else tried to rig a simple remote switch like this? (Halloween props typically use foot pads that complete the circuit in a similar but highly mechanical way.)

    Once again, thanks to all for a great discussion about transistors versus relays, as well as specifics about how my circuitry needs to improve. I will still plow forward with the transistor method, but only as an exercise to broaden my knowledge. 14rhb made a great point about low periodicity, thus swaying my decision to the relay route. I received my relays the other day and saw no problem in eliminating(!) several components (including my ultra-dim ON-indicator LED, as the relay board has two such LEDs). In total, I now have just three components (sensor board, relay board and 9V battery) and several screw connections versus solder connections. As a mass-manufacturing exercise, this option is way more expensive than the transistor version. As a one-off "gadget" of which I will probably make about a dozen of them, the relay version is a quick, reliable and durable solution. I look forward to posting a short video here of the prop and sensor in action.

    Great to hear jgrub and I'm looking forward to watching your videos. If you weren't aware, Element14 held a competition last year called sharethescare with many fun and scary projects, these might give you some other ideas. If you get stuck replicating anyone's project just ask, as you have now hopefully seen what a helpful bunch we all are image
