Happy Pi Day

kmikemoo
kmikemoo over 4 years ago

Ah-h-h!  A day to celebrate being mathematical. image    I jumped on to see what other have posted and...  Hello?  Hello?  Is this thing on?  I must be on the wrong frequency.

Actually, this fits with my observation.  Last year at this time - when we were heading into lockdowns and social distancing, local businesses made a bit deal about Pi Day.  One of the local gas station/convenience stores was selling pies for... you guessed it, $3.14.  This year, with the prospects of vaccination and less restrictions, we have heard almost nothing.  Could it be just my area?  We are having unseasonably warm weather.  Is it that we aren't doing in school learning - so the Raspberry Pi isn't getting into the hands of budding young scientists, engineers and makers?

For me, I'm eating pie today as an act of defiance to those who won't celebrate.  My fork shall be my instrument of rebellion against apathy and indifference!  imageimage

"...One of the local gas station/convenience stores was selling pies for... you guessed it, $3.14..." Due to a difference in calendar formats, pie works out more expensive over this side of the pond, …

I was somewhat surprised by the lack of activity for Pi day also. I expected a few more electronics related sales . It seems the Element14 site is still having problems today... Our oven broke around Thanksgiving…

Our oven broke around Thanksgiving and due to pandemic related issues we are stilling waiting for the replacement we ordered back in December (my wife wanted an American made oven - maybe should have bought a Samsung).  So, no homemade pie for me this year.  I’m going to settle for a Marie Callendar pot pie heated up in the microwave.

maybe should have bought a Samsung

Maybe I had bad luck, but I had a setup with three cooking appliances from this manufacturer and they all developed several faults - those in warranty were repaired for free, those outside I repaired. This included missing thermal wadding causing the chipboard kitchen carcass to char, a succession of 1/4 stainless blade connectors becoming loose/heating/burning through the attached wire, a relay sticking on, glass bulb protector shattering and a large drop resistor cracking in half. Had I not been able to repair myself they would have been expensive repairs or thrown out a long time before.

When I'd finally had enough of things breaking, including the door seals also failing, I decided to replace all three with a well known, high quality German brand, complete with a dedicated Pizza setting image

Regarding pie...I'm getting very hungry with all the talk of nice pies.

My comment about Samsung was not about preference or quality - there a lot of this brand in stock locally and we could have had an oven immediately.  It may not have lasted very long, but nothing does nowadays - even high quality brands.  And a lot of stuff as you point out is delivered broken.

There is huge demand for higher quality appliances because the pandemic has caused a surge in new house building/sales.  So, these are in short supply.

Ah, OK....that makes sense. I'm sure the one you've ordered will be worth the wait image. It's amazing how the entire supply chain across many different areas has been upset by this pandemic. The house build/sales I'm assuming are where people are moving away from the cities?

All of the activity that I see is in the suburbs, but I don’t get into cities much anymore.  I’m about 10 miles south of Portland.

It really seems more like people are trying to upgrade, i.e. move into a better house.  Not sure why that makes sense, but news media attributes it to spending more time at home.  Pre-existing houses in my area sell really fast, most are only on the market for a few days.  But there is a lot of new building happening a little further out and those also sell out quickly (usually during construction).  I guess a lot of people still have money to spend.
